HELP ASAP!!! Gas or electric double wall oven?

HELP ME! I have to call the builder and need advice.

We are building a home and are set to close soon, after months of delays. We paid for an upgraded appliance system and got GE Profile. There is a GAS cooktop and a separate double wall oven, one of them being convection. (or at least it is supposed to be)

Tha appliances haven't been in that long and I finally looked inside the double wall oven last night. I was shocked to see it was ELECTRIC and not gas, as I specified I wanted gas. (Hence, the GAS cooktop.)

DH had paid no attention, as this is not an issue for him. He is not sure it is even plumbed for gas. I know some people got gas ovens and that the neighborhood supports that. It's more a matter of, did the builder prep the house for a gas oven or just electric?

Assuming it is not too late....and it may be.....Which is better? A gas double oven or an electric one? I know I wanted a gas COOKTOP and I got that. I am talking only about a double wall oven, one of them supposedly convection.

I've got to decide if this is worth pitching a fit over. Advice on the two systems welcome.

I have a gas cooktop and electric wall oven. This is actually the most recommended combination. You need the instant temperature control for the cooktop, but you get more even heat with an electric oven. Also there are now a lot of stoves with the same combination, gas on top and electric for the oven.
 
You are living my dream! I will only cook on a gas cooktop but I love electric ovens. In my experience, they are consistent in temperature throughout a baking cycle and have fewer hot spots. And if one were a convection oven, I'd be even happier.
 
I prefer natural gas for everything. I live in Louisiana, so during hurricanes or any other power outage, which seems to be pretty frequently, I can still use my gas stoves. They also seem to be more reliable overall.
 

If you requested gas they would have had to put the proper hookup in. I am not sure they would switch it out now since you have closed. I have a free standing range and a built in oven/microwave combo. I know when we upgraded to that we had to pay for dual fuel lines because of the convection and gas option(I think) it was 6 years ago, but I am almost certain we had to pay 500 for the built in and 500 for the professional oven. I have never had electric, but I have heard on cooking shows they don't cook as evenly. Don't know if that is true though. Having two ovens is great though :)

As far as I know electric is preferred for ovens. So I would leave it honestly.
 
If you have a choice betwen a gas or electric oven ALWAYS go for electric. You're fine I wouldn't change a thing.

I 'hate' cooking with gas - it's been electric 'all the way' for me for 46 years!

Love to cook and bake - have never had any problems with uneven temps. etc.

Would say it's probably a personal decision as both do the job!

I found this information online(apparently I paid for both...hence the dual fuel lines...shows what I know LOL). It looks like they both have pros and cons and either is good. Just a personal preference. If you really want to change I'd give them a call. We have built twice and in my experience once you close, you are pretty much stuck unless it is a defect. It was cost the builder a lot of money to pull out the oven, run the proper equipment and buy a new stove. Most likely they will not fix that.

The choice between a gas oven and an electric oven is usually driven by personal preference. Most people will be used to one type or another and often revert to ovens that they are familiar with. Cooking ranges do come in duel fuel forms (usually gas top and electric ovens) so you do not have to be tied to just one type of fuel. If you are installing a hob and separate (wall mounted) oven then most people will choose an electric oven as it can be costly to run gas pipes to two points.

The main cooking difference between gas and electric is that gas will tend to have a slightly more humid baking environment (as water vapour is produced during combustion) whereas electric ovens tend to have slightly dryer heat. So if you bake a lot of bread or pies then gas may be preferred as the crusts are less likey to become dry or hard. Some people perceive electric ovens to be better for cakes but this is often due to the oven being fan driven and a gas oven with a convection fan in it can also produce great results.

Historically some people also felt that the temperature of a gas oven could be controlled more accurately than an electric oven. However with very accurate modern thermostats we do not believe this is an issue. On the hob or stovetop gas is likely to give slightly more control, particularly as you can see the flame when you adjust it.
 
I have gas cooktop and electric convection wall ovens. That was what I picked out, I completely prefer that combination.

Definitely NOT true! Someone must have been 'pushing' gas cooking??? :confused3

I have baked many a cake, pie, bread, casserole, etc. - No problems!

They both do great - a personal decision!

We have the double wall oven GE Profile with one oven convection too.
Ours is electric. I don't think I would do anything else with an oven.
I don't think they even asked us if we wanted gas for them........as they did for the stove.

Building this house has been a nightmare. If I am living your dream, you need to dream bigger. :lmao::rotfl::rotfl2: One delay after another, messed up things that have to be redone......Awful. I had an electric oven in the last house and one advantage they did have is that they heated up FAST. If I punched 425, in 2-3 minutes max, that thing was at 425.

I have not closed, but it is nearly time. We have had the closing reset more times than we can count. They asked if I wanted gas or electric when we signed up for all the options/upgrades, and I said, "gas." It never dawned on me that if I indicated gas, I'd get a gas cooktop and an electric oven.

Just because they were supposed to put in a gas line does not mean they did it. We've not gotten things we paid for and gotten things we did not pay for. The other day I asked when a kitchen cabinet was due to be completed. The panel is just missing. Turns out, it is not missing. They are putting glass in it. I asked why, as no one else has that in the same kitchen. They said, "You paid for it." I pointed out that I had not paid for it, but that we'd keep it. Sometimes, there is no rhyme or reason to what gets done. There is a building boom going on in Texas, and keeping workers is a challenge.

Believe me, I know I won't get a lick of work done after closing. At this point, I may be stuck with electric for the oven, like it or not. DH does not think they prepped it for gas........

If you were plumbed for gas, you would be able to see the shut-off required by code. You know, to prevent explosions in case of a leak! Check the work order and see if you were charged for it in that location. If you don't have a shut-off and there is a charge, get your money back :)

It's a moot point, anyway, since GE doesn't make a convection/gas wall oven. You'd have to go with something like American Range (BIG $).

I don't believe you'll be unhappy with an electric oven. The cooking difference isn't noticable by most people. You won't see a benefit with a gas oven during electricity loss since most controls are electric.
I LOVE my convection feature, it makes the best roasted anything! Wouldn't trade it for the world.

Yea, if Joey from Friends was here, he'd agree with you that it was a moo point. :rotfl: The last electric oven we had was convection. Maybe that's why it heated so quickly. At this point, I just want to get in the house. :scared:

One piece of advice regarding the ovens. Use the self-clean while it's under warranty with GE. There have been problems with the heat frying the control board. You'll want to find that out while they still cover repair/replacement costs!

Thanks for that tip! I am not a fan of GE, but that's what the builder uses, so GE it is.
 
I love my electric double oven!!! It bakes much more evenly than gas...and I bake a lot! And I have the GE and love it. It has so many great cooking options!
