HELP! Just found out FIL passed away few hours ago in Tucson from CLT or around here! I called few airlines and no one offers bereavement fares? UGH! NOt to mention flights sold out due to holidays! UGH any advice????

I know that some airlines used to do this, but I don't think they offer them anymore.

DH used a bereavement fare last year when his Grandpa died around Christmas. I believe it was on Northwest.

The price was not much different than the regular fare (which doesn't make much sense.)

I would give them a call.

Sorry to hear about your FIL. :grouphug:

I just googled, and found out that American, United, Northwest and Continental offer bereavement fares. However it's usually 50% off the highest last-minute fare, so it doesn't necessarily mean you'll get a cheap fare. Good luck, and I'm sorry about your father in law. :grouphug:

Airlines claim they no longer offer discounted fares because their rates are already discounted. (This is what US Air and Southwest told me)

thanks everyone ... on hold with airline...everything is booked b/c of the holidays. geepers, it takes so long to get a real person on the phone to talk too :(

When MIL passed away this past August, the Funeral Home had a special number for DH to call in regards to discounted fares. We ended up not using it, found good fares on Southwest, so I don't have the number. I would give the Funeral Home a call that your FIL is at, maybe they could help?

Sorry for your loss. :sad1:

Thanks everyone! FINALLY got ticket leaving tommorow :) Thanks for all condolences!

So sorry to hear of this Lynette. Please let your husband know my heart goes out to him. Will the 3 of you be traveling out tomorrow? You and the rest of the family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Hi chell- no :( only dh is going. we could only get one seat and it was $1122! EEEEKKKK!!!!! ds is cutting 4 teeth and very moody with all travels we did for the holiday, so we decided i would stay here. i am sad ... i wish i could be there for dh and mil. the most horrid thing is fil's own father passed away 2 weeks ago TODAY!

We used cheaptickets.com when my gram died.

Sorry for your loss.

I'm sorry about your FIL. When my dad died, we also learned that the bereavement fare was 50% of a full-fare ticket, so more expensive than what your normally pay. We ended up using miles to fly free, since it would have been so expensive. Of course, you wouldn't be able to do that this week. :sad2:

Lynette,

I am sorry for your loss. My experience was that the bereavement fares were worse than booking my own flight online. I've flown Song and Southwest within 24 hours of booking. Both times to NY for less than 130 from Tampa.

Again I am so sorry. Do you have my number? If not, I'll PM it to you and you should call me any time.

Please know that each of you are in my thoughts and prayers.
