Help!!! Any computer experts out there?

I have a computer that I want to move from the basement office upstairs to the kitchen. My problem is that the Linksys router is hooked up to the CPU of that computer.

Can I take another computer that I'm not using and hook that up in its place? Will I have wireless access on all the computers then?

Sorry, I'm not very computer literate and I don't know all the computer terms. There are just a lot of wires and cables to deal with and if I do move it up here and then it doesn't work, that's a lot of wasted time.

I don't have enough room on the kitchen desk for the router and modem, plus I don't have the phone jack there.

If the router has wireless capabilities, you do not need any computer to be hooked up directly to it.

If the computer that you are moving has a wireless adapter you should be good to go.

Then do I have to hook the cable from the router to anything else? And how do I find out if the computer I am moving has a wireless adapter?

It's a Sony Vaio, 2-3 years old, if that tells you anything.

I warned you in my first post that I don't know anything about computers.

If it is a wireless router(not all are) all it has to be physically connected to is the internet connection(you mentioned modem) and its own power source, it can then wirelessly share that internet with capable computers within range.

If you have model numbers I am sure I or other board members maybe able to determine if your PC and Router have wireless capabilities built in.

Even your PC lacks a wifi card, they can be had for less than $20 and install is pretty painless.

It is a wireless router and the model # of the computer (Sony) is PCV-2242. I unplugged the router from the computer and it wouldn't connect so I'm guessing it doesn't have a wifi card? Or could it be something else? My laptop stayed connected but I guess that's neither here nor there.
