Help! Any advice? Sick before half...

Shan,

So sorry to hear you're feeling lousy. Get plenty of rest, you still have time to get it out of your system. You've gotten good advice from everyone. Remember to hydrate. I hope you're feeling better soon!

Shan- Are you better? Do you still have a time goal? If so, I'd dump it right now. ;) You don't need that added stress. You might want to take Cecilia up on her offer. I ran a few miles with her in the full- she's a lot of fun and knows her stuff. She'll take care of you.

Get well, girl!

I'm alive! :yay:

I feel much better today. That bug had me down 6 days! Killer!

I still have a little gunk going on in the nose and chest, but overall feel much better. :thumbsup2

Thanks everyone for all the pixie dust!

I'm now contemplating going out for a short run. It feels like FOREVER since I ran and I'm having a hard time imaging myself running a half this weekend.

I wanted to run it under 2:30. I know I need to be realistic now, but I'm kinda bummed about it all. I know I'm not where I was at before energy wise.

I'll report back if I run.

Cecilia, I'm so upset you haven't had your check cashed yet for the Peachtree. What in the world?!? :headache:

Congrats on feeling better Shan! Just take it easy if you do get out there...I'm sure your body is still in the recovery phase. No need to push anything this close to the Half.

OK, just got back in from a 3 miler. I ran it in 33:37 and it hurt. My under 2:30 goal seems pointless now. I walked in and started crying. I think I really irritated DH. I'm having like a total self pity party. I feel like all this excitement I had for my first half and the hours I've put in were wasted. I have no energy and I had a coughing fit that lasted for like ten minutes after.

Cecilia, I'm afraid I'd hold you back too much at this point. :confused3

Shan...

Deep breaths girl. Don't panic. It's only Tuesday. You are still recovering from the flu and nasty bronchial stuff. This run should have hurt...if it didn't I'd have been shocked sweetie. Don't give up on your time goal...but don't stress if you don't hit it either. Your first major distance event is about the experience, the comraderie, the accomplishment...not the time. Just go into the event willing to accept the accomplishment for what it is...a HUGE personal achievement, regardless of your pace.

Please don't give up hope though....you worked hard and deserve to enjoy your time on the course and deserve to feel proud when the race is over. Look at it as a badge of honor to run less than a week after having the flu. Some people are out of commission for a month after the flu...you're back out there running so soon.

Hang in there...you WILL do great on Sunday. I can't wait to read of your accomplishments and experience. Just don't push too hard in the days ahead. Short easy runs if any runs at all. Stretch a lot. TONS of fluids!

Shan,
Good luck to you in your first half. My first event was the WDW Half Marathon and I am a walker. I remember being so nervous about time and such. PLEASE just enjoy the moment. You will find many people around you that will support you and help you to hang in there. I find walkers to be VERY friendly, so if you find yourself having to walk, just start up a conversation with someone around you and before you know it you'll be further along than you realize and then......"poof":wizard: you cross the finish line!!! It really will happen and just finishing will be what matters. The feeling and experience will last a lifetime!! Take it all in and live in the moment. Take in all the sights and sounds, from the waiting for the race to start to walking around at the end with the medal around your neck!! It will all be over before you know it!!
Good luck and HAVE FUN out there!!!
