Help a DVC rookie regarding borrowing points question for reservation

So I just bought a resale DVC, 25 points to get a toe wet and see if we like the program. I've read through a lot and got a decent overall grasp before signing the papers, but I'm curious about something that I can't seem to find specifically (whether it's my poor Google skills or just something that's not frequently encountered...)

We're trying to set up a waitlist for our first reservation for two nights. The seller had borrowed 11 points from this year, so we only 14 to play with for 2018 (UY Aug). We have a very specific plan for next year, which would require most of our 2019 and 2020 points.

What I'm wondering is, if we waitlist can I say "no, don't borrow future points" and still get the reservation and at that point be able to buy one-time-use points? Alternatively, can we mix some future borrowing and one time use (say, borrow three from the future, and buy 10 OTU points)?

Thanks for any insights.

You must use your own points for waitlisting. You cannot use One Time Use Points. Your best bet would be to make a reservation at your home resort and buying as many OTUP as you need for the two nights. And hope that will cover your waitlist. Otherwise, just skip the waitlist this year and book what you can get with your 14 points and up to 24 OTUP.

Thank you for answering. I just to be sure I understand: we could, if we were inclined to gamble, buy OTUP for an open reservation, and then waitlist with a reservation that would cancel the home resort one?

Do you (or any other viewers of this convo) know what happens if you're short points and say "Do not borrow"?

Thanks again!

You can't say Do not Borrow anymore. When you set up a waitlist you agree to borrowing if it's necessary.

You cannot say do not borrow. You must have the points in your account to waitlist. If you don't want them to borrow and you don't have enough current year points (including banked points), you cannot waitlist. Waitlisting will borrow the points. Why not borrow the points this year and then buy the OTUP points at seven months out for the next trip? Book as many nights as you can with your available points and then at seven months out, purchase the OTUP points to add a night or two.

Yes, you can buy OTUP to book your trip at seven months out. But if you get a waitlist that takes fewer nights, they will use the OTUP first leaving the unused current year points. Then if you are within the banking period, you could bank the left over points. However, if your waitlist hits and you are past your banking period, you will need to either use the left over points before they expire or lose them.

OK, thank you so much, Deb and Kathy. I appreciate the info and now I'm pretty darned sure I have a good grasp.

I had no doubt I'd have answers lickety split.
