Can anyone give me any advice on how to deal with this.
My 9 year old broke his ankle last night and we leave for our 9 day trip in 2 days.
He is devastated.
We had an amazing doc who put him
In one of those black walking boots untill we get back then they will cast him. They said he could take it off to cool down in the pool but that's about it.
I will obviously have to rent a wheel chair bc that would be way to much walking- even with a walking boot.
I'm guessing for a 9 year old- the push wheelchair would be better then the motorized ones.

Can anyone give me info on how it will work getting on the rides? Do we just enter the regular lines with the wheelchair?
I don't want to seem like "that family" abusing the system at all.

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated- thank you.

I'm so sorry! That stinks! I would be devastated too!

You can't rent a scooter through Disney, as you have to be 18 years or older to do so. You may want to bring a pair of gloves to help keep the wheelchair pusher's hands from getting blistered.

Also, the CMs at the rides will let you know if the wheelchair can go through the regular queue or not. Let them guide you.

Good luck!

All the Disney parks rent wheelchairs, but its limited availability and they don't take reservations. A 9yo may have move fun with a motorized scooter and everyone else in your party won't get tired pushing him. There are many local companies where you can rent one. As far as the rides go you may want to look into the Disabled Assistance System [DAS], this pass is issued at the parks and gives you back door entry to many of the rides. I don't think many of the ride lines will have space for a wheelchair or scooter.

Look on the disability board. There is contact information for off site rentals. Go with one of those and ask for a pediatric chair. He will be much more comfortable. You can't rent a motorized scooter or power chair for him. The former you have to be 18 and the latter you have to be a regular user and the places need lead time to set it up for you.

Since this is a mobility issue a das would not be issued. Most of the lines are mainstreamed and those that aren't will give you a return time for the wheelchair.

There is only one local company that may rent to under 18 but they have to meet the child and usually it's only to someone who is 16 or17. An ecv is not a fun toy and if used irresponsibly in a crowded area can hurt someone.

The off-site companies all require you to be 18 to rent an ECV, so that isn't an option. You also won't be issued an DAS card, because mobility issues aren't eligible for them. What you will do is when you get to the attraction, ask the castmember what you need to do and they will direct you. Most of the lines are now streamlined for wheelchairs so you will just wait in the regular lines. Check out the DISabilities board for lots of great information.

from disneys website.. some local rental companies. If you rent off property it will guarantee that you will have a wheelchair available because at the parks it is first come first serve and i would hate to see you not get one, plus it is usually cheaper through them to rent.
ScooterBug: (800) 726-8284
CARE Scooter Rentals: (800) 741-2282
Buena Vista Scooter Rentals: (866) 484-4797
Best Price Mobility: (866) 866-3434
Apple Scooter: (800) 701-1971
This would also help for the walks to and from the buses as those walks can sometimes be long. As you can not take wheelchairs out of the parks.

As far as visiting the parks this is what disneys website states for people with only mobility issues....
Does a Guest whose disability is based on the necessity to use a wheelchair or scooter need a DAS Card?
No, a Guest whose disability is based on the necessity to use a wheelchair or scooter does not need a DAS Card. Depending on the attraction, Guests utilizing a wheelchair or scooter will either wait in the standard queue or receive a return time at the attraction comparable to the current wait
time. For some attractions at Disneyland Resort, these Guests will go directly to an alternate entrance. Guests with additional needs should discuss them with Guest Relations

We did this for our niece a couple years ago. She had a scoliosis brace and could not walk long periods of time. We rented from a company at home so we had it in the airport. It got us boarded on the plane faster too. Most lines accommodate and the CM will direct you where to go. We rented a light weight pediatric chair and was just as easy to push as a stroller. Also gave a place to hang a bag and battery powered light for the Christmas party. Also ask about a knee scooter for him. That might work better.
