Hello from Ohio

I'm a newbie for posting, but have been reading the boards for a while.

My husband (ScottohioCPA, a diser) and I and our 2 kids, DD 15 and DS 10 are planning one of our many trips to Disney in June. We keep saying we are going to plan something different for vacation and go out west, etc. However, it seems every other year we go back to Disney. Last year we compromised. We took the kids out west - to DisneyLand! We also took in the sights around Hollywood.

Just wanted to say hi!

And welcome to another Ohioian. We from northeastern Ohio. We just returned from our 40th trip to WDW last week. We take Amtrak to WDW.

We keep talking about going somewhere else, especcially out west, I've never been west of the Mississippi, wife has and the Disney vacation are nice but lately its just been the 2 of us. Daughter and son in law used to go all the time but now they are all caught up in their jobs and such and haven't made the last 2 trips with us. We figured a train out west, relax but still Disney has everything in one spot, one stop shopping so to speak and I've done the math on a couple of other vacations and hands down, Disney has more and gives more for the buck and no driving involved.

How is it going by Amtrak? I was thinking about doing that sometime. Is it very expensive? We are a family of 6 (2 adults and 4 kids). I always wondered about it.

We live in NE Ohio as well. Amtrak used to have a stop at Quaker Square in Akron, I believe. That would be an interesting way to go. We've always flown, but when my husband was young his dad would drive the family to Florida every summer.

you are right. I forgot about that (in quaker square) I always fly too. My dad would drive us to FLA twice a year when I was growing up and I remember sitting in the back seat SO BORED! I could not imagine driving now as an adult, but going via train may be interesting (at least once).
I'm actually much closer to Cleveland then Akron but the Amtrak station in Cleveland is kinda scary.

We just moved back to Philly after living in NE Ohio for 7 years. I am pretty sure they stopped using that station in Akron (although I may be wrong). There is no direct train from Akron to Orlando. You would have to go over to DC one on train and then switch to the one going south.

I worked for Amtrak years ago as a reservation agent! Can you tell!! LOL

We board Amtrak in Alliance Ohio, about 1 hour from where we live and at 3 am. Amtrak used to stop in youngstown, 20 minutes from us but closed that station, closest one for us is Alliance. We take that train to Washington DC, have a 3 hour layover and catch the south bound train to Kissimmee. We board in DC at 4pm and should arrive in Florida around 2pm. Its a total of 29 hours with layovers if all goes right. We normally travel reserved coach and thaat runs for the 2 of us, round trip $450.00. We sometimes try to snag a conductors special, hoping for a sleeper upgrade on the train, alot cheaper that way, on the DC to Kissimmee leg and on the return leg of Kissimmee to DC, it included all meals for the both of us which are really good. We just returned last week from WDW via Amtrak, got in 2 hours late and no sleeper available going down but snagged one going home, extra 170.00, for a roomette, which is great for the 2 of us and we got 3 meals each out of that leg, a dinner, breakfast and lunch, again we were running late so they included the lunch.

I'm not a flyer, and the only alternative is Amtrak, ain't driving anymore with the semi's and traffic for 20 hours, why not relax, let someone else do the driving, train, its only 9 more hours, no gas or pee stops, train is heated and A/C'ed, provides bathrooms, club car and dining car and a pair of huge reclining seats for our comfort. We take a portable DVD player, Ipods and gameboys plus our lunch and snacks and some books and a blanket and cruise along enjoying the ride.

We took Amtrak one time home from Florida, and it was an adventure! We were six hours late getting into DC, but only 1 hour late getting from DC to Alliance. The crew from Kissimmee to DC was not very friendly, but we enjoyed the trip from DC to Alliance. I'm glad we did it, but I don't know if I would ever do it again. We also didn't have a sleeper car, which I'm sure makes a huge difference. Just MHO.

I know this board can be addictive, but I figured it would help the winter pass more quickly! I'm not much of TV watcher. The other things that I enjoy in the winter (besides the kids' activities) are going to the Y to excercise and reading a good book (currently the Twilight series).

Unfortunately, I have to get back to work!
