Hello! I've been lurking on this site for months now planning out our honeymoon and first trip to the Fort. Thank you all for being so insightful with your comments! I've made a master packing list based on many of your wonderful suggestions. (the cart for hauling gray water to the CS is genius! I never would of thought of that!)

My husband and I will be tent camping but we prefer to call it 'outdoor living' as we have a 14' medieval canvas pavilion. We will be at the Fort Dec 10-16th. I have a digital heater and I plan on bringing our heated blankets to keep us warm at night. We have camped quite comfortably in the winter before but how cold will it get at night? Propane heather cold? Or can I get away with a digital space heater?

I am slightly worried about all the chatter about outside vendors coming into the fort for powerwashing, ect. Is the Fort really that open? Can anyone just stroll on in? Obviously a tent can't be locked- I plan on putting most things in my car when we are gone...but I draw the line at locking up camp items like our chairs, etc. Should I request loop 2000 because it's further away or do you think we will be ok at 1500?

Thanks again all! I'm so excited to be back at Disney! DH and I have been married for 4 years and the Army was just nice enough to grant us this vacation! I'm so worried I'm going to forget something!

I am personally not one to worry about things being stolen from my site. Of course, I wouldn't leave anything of value laying around in the open that would be a temptation. If you have bikes, you might want to lock those up. Bikes are easy for pranksters to take off with. But as far as chairs, basic cooking items or decorations, I wouldn't sweat it. Not to say something couldn't walk away, but I have never had it happen.

Of course, it comes down to your personal tolerance for losing an item. If you are not in a position of easily replacing something, then secure it. If the thought of losing something like a chair doesn't cause you much concern, don't worry about it. But if losing that chair would ruin your day, by all means secure it. It's your vacation, so take whatever steps you feel are appropriate to make sure it's not ruined.

Whatever happens, I hope you enjoy this long overdue honeymoon! And THANK YOU and your DH for your service to our country!!

This is Florida. We don't have much winter weather here. Heck, we don't have much fall weather here. We were at the Fort last week with record high temperatures. The digital space heater should be fine. Just check the weather again before you leave to make sure. And thank you to you and your DH for your service to our country.

We stayed at the fort for the first time last week. We locked our 5th wheel and truck whenever we were away for the day but never anything else.
I felt safe. I didn't lock the bikes either and we keep them on the cement pad next to the rv. We rode our bikes all the way to the front of the campground from loop 200(by the marina) to get a bus for the day. We got back to our bikes undisturbed.
This is our first year with a 5th wheel after tent camping for many years.

Have a wonderful stay!

My trip report from visiting The Fort and catching busses, boats and walking and riding around the campground is included if you care to read it...

I'm still writing it and will answer questions.

1500 vs 2000... depends on what is important to you. Do you want to be near the action or away from it.

We took our pop up to FW in September and were assigned to loop 1500 because loop 2000 was closed. I would not have wanted to be in site 1501 with a tent because it was RIGHT next to the bus stop and the buses start running pretty early. All the others would have been fine. It was within walking distance of The Meadows area: the store, pool, camp fire, movies. The 2000 loop is more remote and it seemed like it would be more quiet.

I am not sure if I will be able to bring bikes. How far is the walk from the 2000 loop as a walk?

Nice to know about 1501- I would hate to be woken up by buses!

First, thanks to you and your husband for your service. I hope you get a chance to enjoy this well deserved vacation.

For people coming from the north like you do from Ohio, I don't think it would be all that cold in early December.

There have been some thefts at the Fort, and we had our kids scooters taken and placed somewhere else when we left them at the bike racks near the pool. We found them, but it was obvious that someone (probably kids) had taken them for a while and then dumped 'em.

Looking forward to your trip report, want to see that monstrous tent you were talking about!
