We are leaving in 4 days and DH is still in pain from his herniated disk. He is under Dr's care and occasionally uses a heating pad at home. I was thinking of putting the electrical cord in my laptop case, and putting the small heating pad in my carryon in its own zip lock bag. I can take the pad out of the carryon and put it in its own bin at TSA screening.
Any suggestions?

not sure about bringing the heating pad but THERMACARE. I love them. He would wear them under his clothes. I wear one to the parks.

Belle, you and I think alike. I have used Thermacare often, and love it. He should put it on no long before boarding the plane, to make sure it lasts though I know they should last several hours.

Great advice. Therma Care it is....Will go out tomorrow to buy some.

As a back-up....

I once ended up traveling by plane a couple of weeks after a car accident in which I got severe whiplash. I started out okay, but by the time I had to transfer to the last puddle-hopper home I was in agony. I asked the flight attendant, while boarding, if they had anything that might help. He filled the headphones bag with ice for me--it worked great!

Those Thermacare things are great.
You should be able to bring the heating pad in your carryon without a problem though. Things like that are not in the list of non-allowed items that I know of. (You can check at www.tsa.gov )
And, if they have any questions, it should be easy for the screeners to check it out.

Thermacare is great for travelling. They last 8 hours, plenty of time to get where you are going. (I hjave used it myself and always put it on just before boarding the plane so that it lasts.) CVS has their own brand which is less costly but works slightly differently-one strap and 4 'packs'.Also BJ's carries the Thermacare and it is less expensive there.
I also suggest a microwaveable heat pack-Micro Beads or Thermalon both made by Bruder Medical in GA. I have found the Thermalon brand at CVS. The back pack Microwaves in 1 min 30 sec and has straps to tie it around your waist. This is great for travelling to use in your room if you have access to a microwave.
