One of my good friends found out we are going to Disneyworld in September and lashed out at me basically saying my child or I would get heat stroke and that it would be best to cancel my trip. Is it really that bad? We are from Washington so I don't know what to expect but I thought I was planning well. We are going for RD then leaving at noon and returning after 4, I have a stroller for my 5 yr old so he is walking and in direct sun, misting fans, water bottles, ect. Please for those that have btdt is it that bad? Now I am kind of scared to go.

I am taking my DD (almost 5 - will be Nov 1) in September. I took the same DD last September at age almost 4, I took that same DD the year before in September at almost 3, and that same DD I took in September the year prior at almost 2. She, nor I or DH, has had heat stroke yet :rolleyes1 Will it be hot - YES!! But if you are sensible, wear lots of sunscreen (don't forget to reapply during the day) drink lots of water and enjoy the indoor attractions when you need a break, you will do just fine. Oh....and one thing we do that helps is pack enough - or plan on doing laundry - where we can have a "fresh" set of clothes after our afternoon break (if we take one). It is definitely very hot - and maybe it helps coming from Oklahoma where it can get really hot - but as long as you are careful you will be fine. (When I say hot - DH is usually already soaked with sweat by the time we get to the bus stop) But it obviously isn't THAT bad since we keep going back in September. OH...and I forgot to mention we went in September when I was 32 weeks pregnant and again - I did just fine.

Yes, it's going to be not only hot, but humid too. I'll be there 9/6-13 and am not really a heat person, in fact, I used to live in Oregon and I daydream about spending summers on the OR coast...but--if I can take it, you'll be fine. We went last year over labor day as well. We used the misting things, wet paper towels, had a fan on the stroller for the 2yo. There are a lot of places to escape the heat for a little break--try to hit Fantasy Land in MK early in the morning or in the evening, that seems to be a hot spot esp as crowded as it gets. Go to things like Ellen's Energy Adventure(EP), Tiki Bird show(MK), ride the TTA(MK)... hit AK early and leave when the heat really gets bad.
Honestly, the crowds were so bearable that it made up for the heat!! That's what we are hoping for again this year. And hopefully you have your ADR's all planned out which is another great break in a cool spot.
Do bring a cover for the stroller and get in the habit of covering it even if it doesn't look like rain, it rains about every day and with little warning at times.
Also--you can ask for a glass of ice water at any concession stand--the water is a little funky tasting but I got used to it, experienced no adverse effects from it and loved having the ice to suck on.
Try to keep your son drinking, eating grapes, apple slices, ice pops--that's my plan anyway.
Have a wonderful time!!!!!

We're from Atlanta, so we're used to some heat.. but we went last year during Free Dining (sept).

We were lucky that 3 of our 4 days, it wasn't very humid. It's the humidity down here that gets ya, not necessarily the heat. 85degrees and high humidity is much worse than 95 with no humidity.

Anyway.. there are so many indoor attractions that it's not so bad. It's also not that crowded, so standing in hot lines wasn't an issue.

We had two kids with us (both four at the time) and one mom was pregnant, and we all did just fine.

Lots of water.. lots of sunscreen... lots of dole whips! Y'all will be just fine!

LOL she is just jealous, because she isnt getting to come with you !
Have a great time!

sure its really hot, like nothing youve probably ever seen. but there are kids that live in orlando, lots of them, theyre fine. and so will your son.
we go the last week of august every year. i ahve 3 kids who are now 2,4 and 8. weve all survived;)

I'm taking my son who will almost be 2 the first week of September. I know it will be hot, but I am planning for that.

I will have plenty of water for him, keep him well lathered in sun screen. His stroller has a shade hood. I will have moist wipes and face cloths (in ziplock bag) to wet to help cool him down. I just ordered online these cooling bandanas that you soak in water and put around your neck to help keep cool during the day. You can also get one of the misting fans to keep cool. I'm bringing a small spray bottle that I can put water in and mist him every so often to keep cool.

Plus many of the attractions are indoors with AC. We are planning on ging back to the resort for an afternoon break.
This trip is for my son and I have every intention of taking it at his pace. We don't have to see and do everything - I want to focus on the things he likes and move at a pace that he will be comfortable with and if it gets too hot for him - we got back to the resort and hit the pool and the AC.

As long as you keep everyone well hydrated (water is better than soda & juices) and stick to a relaxing pace you will be fine.

You took the words right outta mouth mouth! People not only live in Orlando, they *gasp* have babies there! And I dare say, most of residents have never had heat stroke!

You sound like a careful, attentive parent. Really, I think your friend was being a little over the top. It will be hot & humid, but if you drink plenty of water, wear sunscreen, and cool off during the mid-day your child should be fine--just like all the other 5 year olds who live in Florida all the time.

Are you prone to heatstroke? Is this person aware of an existing medical condition and worried about you or is she just being pushy?

Yes, my friends would be vexed if I decided to go running around to Florida in September. I have a chronic and potentially life threatening condition and humidity and extreme heat are triggers. Most people, however, do not suffer from such things and will be just fine. If you or your kid are in some way fragile, think carefully. If not, consider the thousands upon thousands of people who go at that time of year and are just fine.

We went last September,DD turned 5 while we were there the baby was 7 weeks old. We had such a terrible time in the heat ;) that we are going in August this year. DD will still be 5 the baby will be 1

And Snow White was waiting patiently for us to arrive at Epcot, no one else was there.

We had many more experiences like these.

bring water to the parks and take breaks if you feel you need them, but stay home only if you choose to. not because someone else says you should. Life is too short to stay home because it might rain.

Aww thanks guys! We are not going to cancel. Everyone had very valid points and I can not wait to experience disneyworld with my husband and son!

Goodness! I live SOUTH of Orlando and haven't had heat stroke once! The only person I know who has gotten it spent all day working on his roof.

That being said, we've taken DD every Sept for 3 years running - and several other times during the year as well. We power through, and are quite often done at 2 or 3 for the day, but that's our choice. We go back to the room, change, rest, then do whatever strikes our fancy. We've always kept bedtime so no evening returns to the parks.

And I have to tell you that my worst trip ever for heat/humidity I think was in May. Either that or we just plan better now? You wanted to change everything from the skin out when you got back to the room, if you catch my meaning... So bring extra everything!

You're doing it right :thumbsup2 - stroller for resting, misting fan for fun/cooling, LOTS of water. Remember a hat also. DD wore a baseball cap on our last trip and she seemed to think it made things better. I always carried it but never forced the issue - now she's a convert!

I agree with the others - methinks that the green-eyed monster has your friend!
