Just came back to work after have three days off and silly me thinking was going to be a quiet Saturday. Well, around 10 a.m. we get dispatched as a mutual aid ladder truck to the next town over for an automatic fire alarm.
I am the driver/operator
on my crew and we start out on the response. Now on the main route we take it's two lanes with a turning lane at the intersections.
Our ladder truck is equipped with an opticom system which will turn the traffic light green for us but, you still have to use caution going through the intersections.
As we approach the intersection I see all three lanes are full of traffic and I have the green, I start to go against traffic in the opposite lane and start to enter the intersection.
Well to my surprise the driver in the turning lane facing me decides he'll turn in front of me
well I stomped on the brakes, layed on the air horns, the Captain grabbed the dashboard and I thought I was going to wpe out this idiot driver.
When I stopped all 56,000 pounds of our ladder truck I was three inches from his side door (I'm not kidding, just three inches).
I check and all the crew is okay, we get out and I start to yell at the driver just what provoked him to turn and he says "I thought you were going to turn left" I almost hit him I was so mad!!
Had I crashed into this idiot I would have killed him and would have to live with that the rest of my life.
And after all this the automatic alarm was for burnt food on the stove.
Someone was looking after me today.

I'm so glad no one was hurt.
