Heard a tidbit last week

Where is River Country in relation to everything else? I'm assuming it's next to Fort Wilderness?

(yes, I'm young. I've heard of it but have never been there to my knowledge).

Ditto! When did it close? Does anyone have pics of RC? Looks like it would have been a neat place.

River Country closed "temporarily" during the cutbacks that were made after September 11, 2001. But River Country never reopened.

There's a good map of River Country at http://www.talkdisney.com/maps/WDW_River_Country.jpg

There are postcard pictures of River Country at http://www.bigbrian-nc.com/wdw-pc47.htm

There's a Wikipedia article about River Country at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/River_Country

Here are some photos of River Country that we took in October....

Thanks for the info and pics guys. It looks like it would have been a hit but I'm sure there's some reason why it didn't make it. Hopefully they can do something with the area--it's sad to see it just rotting away.

So let's see, DVC at Audobon Landing?
or Villas at the Hitchcock Hotel? :lmao:

Just thinking . . .

OOHHH I SEE , there was a thread about a resale on EBAY that included Rivercountry , NOW we know it must be true. Is it too late to bid ?! <G>

River COuntry isnt there anymore???:sad2:
Well... River Country (or what's left of it) is still there, deteriorating in the Florida sun and storms. It hasn't been open to the public for over 5 years.

However, as this thread indicates, it hasn't been demolished either. So there is some hope that Disney will eventually spend the many millions of dollars it would take to reopen an updated version of River Country — if there's a business case that justifies such an investment as well as the ongoing operating costs.

Potentially, Disney could build a Disney Vacation Club near River Country. It could be a great location for a DVC resort, with views of Bay Lake, access by foot to the Fort Wilderness dining and shopping area, and shared boat and bus transportation with Fort Wilderness.

If there is ever such a DVC resort, then it might make sense to reopen River Country as an exclusive super pool for the DVC resort and Fort Wilderness (rather than as a gated attraction).

This is purely speculation, with a dose of wishful thinking thrown in. The only rumor I've ever heard is the OP at the beginning of this thread.

DVC water park? Sounds great. I'm not sure what purpose it would fill, as all the DVC resorts have their own pools and amenities.

If this had anything to do with DVC I would suspect a separate, new entire resort. Put me down to buy that one please!!!! And make it a Colonial theme.

I don't think a DVC waterpark is any more likely than DVC lounges in the parks.

Great pictures Greenban! Love the activities that they have planned at the new DVC.(Tongue planted firmly in cheek).

I think they are going to make a super pool for FW just to keep the FW people out of the WL pools! Now THAT would be doing something for this DVC owner! :cool1:

Is that a problem? DH read this and said "See this is why I am not crazy about trying VWL."

There are timeshare campgrounds in existence, you purchase a fixed weeks use of a campground - same deal as other timeshares, you pay up front, pay maint fees etc.

Could DVC be considering this? DVC at Fort Wilderness - only instead of a complex of vacation villas, it is a complex of campsites. Could use the same DVC points that we all know and love - it would just be one more DVC resort, only you reserve a campsite instead. Same 11 month / 7 month rules would apply, if you own at CSFW (Camp Sites at Fort Wilderness) you can book a site at 11 months, other DVC members can book at 7 months etc.

I think that there would be some demand for something like this.

I found these updated plans for DVC River Country Rehab searching the OC website.

Enjoy

I don't want to get this thread locked but the group in the second photo are clearly stuffing 6 adults in a 1 BR raft. And the additional wear and tear is quite obvious. Where are Dean and Deb & Bill when you need them

Wow! Will that new DVC water park allow pets? Or is that an animatronic dog on the raft? What'll Disney think of next?:confused3
