Heard A Rumor...........

This same rumor has been flying around NW Arkansas for some time now. Everyone is saying that higher-ups in Wal Mart are grabbing up land just across the Missouri border because Disney has purchased land there and is planning on doing a theme park based on Walt Disney being from Marceline. I think Disney is just like any other company, looking to make money, and real estate here in NW Arkansas is THE place to do it. I'll believe the rumor when I see it actually taking place.

But think about the two locations of Disney theme parks in the US right now: California and Florida. Both have relatively warm temperatures year round. Ergo, they're open all year and have the ability to make money every single day (which, when you think about it, is what Disney's all about). Would they really build in a place where they'd have to be shut down for months at a time? I dunno, just my opinion.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see more Disney parks throughout the country. The more Disney places for me to go, the better!

My friend just bought into a new development in the VA suburbs - on the fringe of DC - and her development corporation bought the land from Disney. Apparently the rumor was that Disney had purchased the land to develop some sort of American Adventure resort close to the capital. I don't know if it's true, but for whatever reason the land was once owned by Disney.

That's not a rumor, Lorelai. Disney planned to build a theme park there, and then decided not to due to objections from the local community.

Is that really true? With all the land still left at WDW, it seems awfully presumptuous of him to say no more theme parks there anytime soon. I have a strong suspicion if Universal starts creeping up on their attendance figures, he may have a change of heart.

Someone posted a link to a website with last year's attendance figures. I think it was touringplans.com that had it. I wished I'd saved it. Universal attendance was off last year to the point that IOA fell behind DCA in attendance. Only USO beat even DCA in attendance. I wouldn't hold your breath on Universal forcing Disney's hand.

He also added that the focus should be on making the current parks stronger (ie. add more attractions.) Everest and Soarin are good examples of that.

I would concur with that. Though I do hear a rumor of plans to add an animal Kingdom out west.

What about all the land Disney bought in SC for a park there??? :rotfl2: I have a friend whose parents have a timeshare at Myrtle Beach who want to re-sell it. They resue to take less than what they paid for it (mucho dinero) and say they will get a lot more for it because Disney is supposed to be building a park in SC. :lmao:

If they were going to build another park, why would they do it so close to the ones they already have?

Years and years ago there was a rumor going around our area that Disney was purchasing land along I-70 to build a smaller park. People are still talking about it today and I highly doubt Disney would want to build a park in Indiana! :lmao:

I think rumors must go around like this all the time. There were rumors a few years ago that Disney was buying land to build a park in northwest Mississippi, just directly south of where we are in Memphis. The rumor was quickly squashed-- I never believed it.

With all these rumors, it sounds like Disney is going to have a theme park in every state. :rotfl:

The planned theme park in Virginia (Disney's America) was not just a rumor - the land was bought and it was ready to go. It was planned for Haymarket, Virginia, just outside of Gainesville, Virginia. After word got out, many local residents objected to the over-development and the impact that they expected it to have on the land, some of which has historic value. After the project was defeated, Disney pulled out. Since that time, the once-tranquil landscape in and around Gainesville, Virginia has exploded with growth - new residential communities and shopping centers everywhere. I guess there's some truth to the old saying, "Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it."

I live in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia and Disney actually does own property in our Historic Williamsburg area.

They had plans to build a type of educational Mickey themed park and our residents voted against it. I WAS CRUSHED :sad2: . What better way to get kids to want to learn about our roots as a country and all the history in Williamsburg and the surrounding areas (Yorktown, etc.) than to learn in through Mickey!

This ole' Old Dominion of ours! I'm still MAD!!

I live in Prince William County, VA (northern VA) and several years ago Disney did buy land in the northwestern part of the county, next to Manassas Civil War Battlefield (Bull Run) for a history theme park. However, they had such opposition to the location so close to the historial sight, etc., that they sold the land at a reduced price to the National Capital Area Council of BSA and it has turned into a cub scout camp with opening day on May 6th.
