Flying Calgary -> Wpg -> MCO, clearing Customs in Wpg.

Any suggestions for snacks to bring on the flights for DD5 and DD9? Don't want to eat just junk food, but it doesn't have to be "all organic" either :) More concerned that it be something kids will like; is easy to carry; and, will clear Customs.

(If you have something "all organic" that fits the bill I'm up for that too :) )

Kids like honey-roasted peanuts, but not sure I want to bring those out of respect for other kids on flight who might have allergies.

Thoughts?

Thank you!

This is a hard one. My kids are older now but I still always make banana bread for our plane rides. I pack it in a tupperware style sandwich container and it travels well like that and I know they will eat it and be full. Is it healthy? Sort of! Yes I make it with 1/3 cup of butter and brown sugar but at least it is not processed and full of preservative and it feels like a little bit of home while travelling. Now, having said this I really dont know about clearing customs with something like that! When we travel, we drive across to Buffalo and it is not an issue. I know when my kids were little they really liked Bretton minis(crackers) I know these are carb heavy and processed but it was (and still is) a favorite snack. You could bring a tiny cooler type lunch bag with crackers and cheese. Worse thing that could happen is they take it away from you. Goodluck with this...

The one bit of advice I would give is limit the dried fruit snacks. They contain alot of fiber and lest just say it backfired on me on a long trip.

I have done little pretzel bags, rice crispy treats, and often once you clear security there's usually a fruit option near the gates. Also, you can bring empty water bottles through security and then fill at any Starbucks or something.
I wouldn't bring fruit, veggies, or meat through customs, but I usually drive across the border and fly out.

I take raisin, rice cakes, nutri-grain bars and sugar-free suckers for takeoff and landing to help with their ears

We prefer a good protein snack as it fills you up and stays with you. We bring a couple of bags of Jack Links Jerky with us. We asked US Customs first time we did, and they said packaged processed meats were okay. Jack links should be doubly okay - it is Made in USA and USDA inspected. Just keep the bag sealed until you clear so there are no questions about repackaging. Good energy bars work too - Lara bars are a favorite for our crew.

Just curious but how do you take snacks on the plane? I am Canadian but fly out of Detroit as it is closer to me. But you can not bring food or beveridge's through security ? I always buys crappy junk food once we get through security.

Although in November my 6 year old forgot his yogurt from his happy meal on the way to Detroit in the side of his backpack and it got through secuirty. A little smushed and warm but made it through. What a freaking mess, let me tell ya !

You can bring VERY SMALL drinks as long as they are less than the TSA size limit and fit into your baggie. In the past we've brought the very small size yoghurt drinks (less than 100 ml). You can also bring DRIED fruit snacks across the border (make sure you declare it though!). It's terrible for the kids' teeth though.

I've also brought sugar snap peas & baby carrots across in the past. Just made sure they were still in their pkgs and they were from the US.

Our family likes to take dried fruit such as dried mangoes or dried apricots, especially if you are worred about nut allergies. Dried fruit + nuts; trail mix; granola bars are also good to take and you don't have to worry about keeping them cool. Costco sells some large packs that are very tasty. And we've never had any problems taking them on the plane with us.

Making your own sandwiches are great but often a chore when there so many other things to do/remember and they often get squished in the bag

Have a great trip!
