Health insurance coverage for college kids?

that is accurate. I work in insurance and it is correct.

I work in insurance as well and we have had a lot of inaccurate stuff pass our desks. We don't do health but licenses are life/health/DI in NH so we get all the sales literature. I am getting to where I trust no general questions. And calling the carrier on this one doesn't seem to do much good since they haven't implemented yet. Even carriers that are willing to implement early are not being taken up on their offers by the company carrying the policy.

So true, we are offering the gap coverage and hardly any employer groups are taking us up on it. We get weekly updates on what is going on, so far what was posted in the article is sticking week after week.

I have NOT heard anything on the whole "they can be married and still stay on their parents plan". Frankly I can't see how or why that should be allowed. If you are old enough to be married and living on your own then you should have your own insurance.

So say a college dependent is 25 right now, birthday is Oct 23 (turning 26). The plan year starts August 1st.
He's pretty much out of luck at this time?

I live in Ohio and I received notification that they can actually be covered up to the age of 28 once the federal law expires at age 26. Under this Ohio plan there are stipulations that apply and it does appear that an additional premium will be assessed to add that dependent which the employer has the right to pass along to the employee. They must be unmarried, live in Ohio and be a full time student to obtain that extra two years coverage once the federal expires. Your best source of information would be your insurance company or HR department where the insurance is provided by to see if you state provides any extra coverage.

To the OP sometimes those school plans provide only very minimual coverage with limits on them. (which is ofcourse better than no coverage. That is something else you would need to check into.

My understanding of the new law was that you had to be able to claim the young adult as a dependent on your tax return for them to continue to be eligible for coverage to age 26.
.

The motivation for the change was so non-dependent children in their first job that does not offer health insurance would have a reasonably priced option. I guess it varies from state to state, but here in California, dependent children already can stay on their parents plans until their 24th birthday (until age 23 years, 364 days) if their parents employer buys insurance, or until age 23 if the parents have an employer who self insures.

Thats not totally true about california. In California dependent children CAN stay on their parents insurance until 24 but ONLY if they are full time students. Once they are not full time students, they dont qualify right now.

Yes, I omitted the full time student part. Moot after September when Obama care goes into effect, since that is not a requirement of the new Federal law.

You could also get an individual policy on the college student and not have to worry about this.
