Heads up for Canadian drivers in Florida

Hurrah! Thanks for the link. That was such a stupid law, so glad it got turfed before we head down. For insurance (and you know, for insurance), we'd have gotten it, but glad we didn't have to.

No need to worry...it's been repealed...just shows the power of us Canucks :)

On our local news the Governor of Florida indicated that they passed the law with the intention that it was for foreign language driver's licences but that was not how it ended up - he said it was not meant for visitors from Canada or the UK, who make up a large percentage of their tourism.

It did seem like a ridiculous law but until it is repealed, it is still the law and as such your Canadian insurance company could deny any claims made. The president of the Insurance board (or whatever they are called) said just because a law is not being enforced, does not change that it is a law.

If I was heading to Florida before the law is repealed, I would spend the money and get an IDP, just to be on the safe side.

Doesn't it still have to be approved by the Senate before it actually repeals the law?? If so, they would still require the IDP until approval takes place...for those heading south soon.

As I mentioned earlier - call your insurance broker - ask them directly as all insurance companies have advised their brokers the stance they are taking on this - our company is NOT advising customers to purchase the license - and if you get in an accident your insurance will not be affected

but that is one company - guessing, posting on here, will do no one any good if they have not talked directly with their insurance representative as they are the only ones who should guide you in how to proceed!

Good- it's done and dusted. Glad I was able to convince DH to hold off on getting the IDP last month. I must say that this (the repeal) all happened much faster than I thought it would.
