Head Lice on the Magic week of 2/4

Do you have any idea what measures were taken in the Club/Lab to prevent further spreading?

I was told both rooms were going to go through an extensive cleaning after they closed for the night. It sounds like it's the same cleaning routine they do between cruises. I don't know what was involved. I know our room was steam cleaned repeatedly and we sent our belongings to a special washer/dryer with hotter temps to be cleaned. The head of housekeeping/sanitation, all of the staff in the medical clinic, and the supervisor of guest relations all coordinated care/treatment for those affected.

This makes sense as these would be the same sorts of proceedures a school or daycare would have to follow to prevent the spread of lice and an investation from occurring. They would have to wash your sheets/bedding separate in hot temps to kill and keep it from getting spread further and from recontaimation.

But I agree that the likely hood of having contacted it and found it within hours of going to the lab are pretty much nonexistant. It is much more likely they you contacted it before you came on board and it was just noticable within hours.

I really shouldn't have opened this tread though because the mention of the word lice makes my head start to itch.

It would be nice to know exactly where they originated. We were not the first ones to find them onboard, nor were we the last. We just know our timeframe based upon our activities that day and having a crew member tell us our daughter was "clean" that morning. There was one family Guest Services was trying to locate a translator to help them. My heart goes out to them. As I mentioned, we don't know the full scope.

We live very close to the Port of Los Angeles and drive by the Wonder pretty regularly on Sundays. On occasion, we will see a large crane type lift going up to one stateroom and staying up there (as opposed to going from room to room).

I have never worked with the cruise lines so I don't know this as a fact but I've always assumed that the lift was at that particular stateroom because it needed a "deeper" cleaning. Possibly someone in that room had been sick during the cruise, possibly there were plumbing repairs, etc. I'm not sure but you can tell that, at times they focus on doing more to individual rooms.

With lice, all bedding, pillows, etc. needs to be washed in hot water and floors and furniture need to be vacuumed. It is unfortunate that you had to deal with this but you did the right thing by notifying the ship so that they could clean the room well and not spread the lice to another family.

I really don't think that your child could have had nothing in the morning and an infestation hours later. Perhaps the hair braider is covering herself for not being vigilant, as I can imagine that particular job would get a bit repetitive, so it would be easy to braid the hair and switch off at the same time. My mother was a school nurse all her working life and as other posters have said, it takes time for eggs to be laid and the louse to hatch. Where you have groups of children playing it is going to be impossible to avoid headlice spreading if one or two of them have it. What could DCL do? There would be a LOT of angry parents if they insisted that children had their hair checked thoroughly before allowing them into the clubs!

Can we use Frontline Plus to prevent and kill lice for a whole month? :goodvibes

Our pediatrician reccomends the Nuvo Method for lice removal. Once my oldest daughter came home complaining of itching and I could find no nits, but using the lice comb and a lupe (magnifying thing) i found some live critters. We did the nuvo method once and then again a week later and my other 2 kids never got it.

Google it. Its a much better treatment than the Chemicals in RID.

you can also use vaseline and a plastic shower cap.....some even swear to use olive oil....those wives are smart....

Well, on the bright side, at least you found them on the cruise and they had to do all that extra cleaning!! :thumbsup2

As icky as lice sound, think of it as a right of passage. A lot of kids do get them at some time.

My DD got it a few years ago when she was in Preschool. Chemical shampoo didn't work, so we did the olive oil/vinegar treatment over a 3 week period. Used tea tree oil during and after. That worked really well, but I am still so paranoid. I check her hair everyday as I comb it. I never want to go through that again. :headache:

I, too, have never heard of someone finding live lice the same day that they were exposed. We discovered them several years ago on DD on Christmas Day. We knew she must have picked them up at school which had been out for almost a week. As far as treatments are concerned, you name it, we tried it. She had thick, wavy, long hair and no matter what we did, we didn't quite succeed. Our doctors most recommended treatment was mayonnaisse, applied to the scalp and hair thoroughly, covered with a shower cap and left on overnight (talk about a lovely smell in the morning - LOL.) Ultimately, we had to cut DD's hair short to nip the problem in the bud. Ironically enough, I had purchased the Robi comb as a last resort, but never ended up needing it.

OP still hasn't made very clear what was found.

If a few live creatures--and nothing else--were spotted on her kid's head then sure she could have gotten then from the kids club. The ship physician may have prescribed the shampoo out of an abundance of caution (honestly more for the cleanliness of the ship/cabin than the child, which I understand could be very annoying).

If on the other hand there were visible nits in the kid's hair and/or multiple adult lice that kept showing up day after day then he/she came on the ship with it. Sorry.

Please refrain from making assumptions about why the OP posted....either being a troll or looking for compensation. Come on....I hope we are little more compassionate on this board than jumping to those conclusions.

Anymore posts like that will be deleted.

MJ,
Thanks for intervening. I actually feel bad for the poor guy telling his experience. Everyone is flaming him.:flower3:

Thank you. I appreciate the kind words. Anyone who has gone through this knows how horrific it can be. I honestly hope none of you go through it (again for some of you).

Moderator, feel free to close this thread. If anyone has any experience from this same time, please PM me. Thank you again.
