A man who said he was shopping for an engagement ring ran out of a Copley Township jewelry store with a large diamond worth more than $62,000, police said.
The incident unfolded at about 8 p.m. Saturday at Jared's, 3900 Medina Road.
According to a police report, the man went inside the store and asked a salesperson to show him the store's biggest engagement ring in stock.
The clerk showed the man a loose 3.95-carat round solitaire diamond and a white gold ring. The man then grabbed the jewelry and fled.
Copley police and the FBI are working together on the case.
Scott Wilson, an FBI spokesman, said the agency regularly works with local law enforcement in such instances because the crimes usually involve interstate movement.
''Sometimes these guys go state to state, and we can help track them because that's what we're good at,'' Wilson said.
The diamond, with a retail valued of $62,500, is laser engraved with ''LEO100020932'." The ring, a size 7, is valued at $500.
Police describe the suspect as a black male, 25 to 30 years old, with a goatee and short hair. He wore black pants and a long-sleeved white dress shirt. The suspect also had tattoos on the right side of his neck and left hand.
Anyone with information is asked to call Copley police at 330-670-2705.
