HDDR and dining plan: when do they deduct credits?

I'm confused about when the HDDR tickets are picked up and when the DDP/DxDP credits are deducted. I read somewhere that HDDR credits are deducted early. Is that because you pick up your tickets in your hotel (and then at that time the credits are deducted)? Or what is the procedure? I don't want to freak out because I'm 8 credits short or not pick up tickets in advance if I have to?

Credits are deducted when you pick up your tickets. Gave us a scare this past trip when we thought we were short credits til we realized what happened.

This is the second year we did HDDR on the dining plan. And it was the second year we had a problem. When I had my reservations this year, they charged my credit card, instead of taking it out of our credits. Thanks to some pixie dust and a helpful cm, it was fixed! But it is good to know how it should be done!
