I've always wanted to go to Hawaii, but I don't know which island. It will be an extended family trip, from grandparents (60's) to grandkids (ages 4 and 11 at the time of travel). We're thinking about going in early June. Some of our group will want to snorkel. Staying on the beach is a must (unless it's WAY too expensive).

Can anyone help me figure out where to go?

I would recommend Maui for a first trip, as it's a good all-around type of island. There are lots of hotels on the beach, and they're not always expensive. A good way to save $ is to rent a condo/timeshare (or even a house), especially if you're in a big group, which it sounds like you might be. You can get large accommodations with several bedrooms and bathrooms as well as a full kitchen. Maui has lots of these.

Try www.visitmaui.com for more info.

S. Kihei on Maui has a lot of affordable condos and access to lovely beaches. If you are going for an extended vacation, 10 days or more, you may want to consider two islands. I would suggest that you pick up a travel book on Hawaii (Fodors) to see which islands appeal to you.

How many days? If it is one week then I would agree with Maui. If it is more than a week, than I would think about going to another island. Their is lots to do on Maui. The best thing I would do is get everyone together and look at the variety of activities, check your wallet, and then plan early because some activities sell out early. The site I like is:

www.hawaii.com

I'd be interested in this info also. I am just so overwhelmed trying to plan a trip to Hawaii.

I've never been so I have no advice for you. Just wanted to say how jealous I am! ;)
Oh and I saw this show today called A Wedding Story and the couple was getting married in Hawaii and the bride and her group were getting massages right on the beach with the waves crashing right behind them. Ahhhhh, it looked heavenly. Do that for me and tell me all about it. I'll live vicariously through you. :rotfl2:
Happy planning!!

MAUI!!!
It is the best IMHO. You can be on the beach in a touristy area and then take a drive and be in the "countryside." For snorkeling, I highly reccomend a day trip to Molokini. It is a Pacific atoll with excellent visibility.

There is plenty to do in Lahina and the Old Lahina Luau is great. *sigh* I want to go back!

First of all I am so jealous. I love Hawaii. We went there for our honeymoon in '96. I agree with the above post about snorkeling at Molokini. It was one of our favorite things that we did on Maui as well as bike down Haliakala (spelling is wrong I'm sure) at sunrise.

If you have the time to visit another island Kaui is nice and also the Big Island. Both very laid back compared to Maui. Try to get a video from the library - that's what we did and the travel channel seems to have a lot of special programs on Hawaii - you can check their website for details. Have fun!

Have a "Lahaina Sunburn" for me at Cheeseburger in Paradise! :cool1:

Hubby and I went to Oahu in 2005 and it was wonderful but if we were to go again it would be Maui!

We love Kauai! We were there 2 years ago and have reservations again
for July 8-15. It is beautiful, laidback, easy to get around and just amazing!

If you need any recommendations on a travel agent PM me and I'll pass on my t/a who has amazing prices.

No matter which island you pick...you will love! You will be in Hawaii!!! :sunny: :goodvibes

One of my favorite sites is www.fodors.com. Click on talk and search "Hawaii". Its a very active board, and there are lots of people who can answer any question you have....eventually.
