My daughter is planning a trip to Kauai and is looking for recommendations on a hotel that is nice, in a safe area, but not too expensive. Ideally it would be one that didn't cater entirely to honeymoon couples but that had activities that she, as a young single woman, could join in. Any suggestions or tips?

We honeymooned on Kauai years ago. It is a beautiful island.

We stayed at Princeville, in a time-share. There is a Sheraton there, but it is pretty pricey.

She might want to check and see if there are any Outrigger Hotels on Kauai - they are nice but not outrageously priced.

When we have gone to Kauai we stayed with my grandparents (a perk since they moved there), so I'm no help on the hotel aspect. But when I first went I was 21 and brought along a friend of mine to make it more enjoyable, unfortunately I found the island to be too quite and boring. IMO it was more of a honeymoon/retiree island. While my friend and I enjoyed the beach at Poupoo and driving up to Waimea Canyon the island itself held little interest to us.

You (and your DD) will find that opinions are all over the place as to which Hawaiian island is "best". Like many other things, take it all with a grain of salt, since it is just all opinion.
Our family of 4 LOVED Kauai! We did so many active outings - sunset cruise up Napali coast, ATVs, kayaking, hiking, sitting on the beach (ok not so active, but did see a sea turtle trying to beach and snorkeled off the shore),... and Waimea Canyon is gorgeous!

We stayed at the Grand Hyatt Kauai so that won't help your daughter's budget. My brother & his wife stayed at the Marriott in Lihue (I think it was the Marriott, but could be the Sheraton). It was centrally located for what they had planned and less expensive. Good deals on condos are out there too. I would suggest going to the Kauai forum on tripadvisor. Lots of good tips on the island including saving money on lodging and other things. And the folks over there are super friendly :thumbsup2
