Hi friends,

I'm graduating nursing school in August, and my wife and I will be traveling to Hawaii to celebrate. We will be there for 10 days and have the option of doing all 10 days at her mom's condo in Waikoloa (Big Island) or doing the first couple days at Aulani (we can use our DVC points) and then 7-8 days on the Big Island. What are your thoughts on this and what are our must dos on Oahu if we do a split stay???

We have been to Maui once before and loved it. Other than that neither of us has been to either the Big Island or Oahu.

Looking forward to hearing what everyone has to say.

Thanks!

I think a split stay is a great idea. Comparing Oahu and the Big Island is apples and oranges. Oahu must do's are Pearl Harbor, Waikiki Beach, Diamond Head, Haunauma Bay (to name a few). The BI is like no other place on earth. If you just want to park yourselves at a resort, I'd say stay at Aulani. If you want to get out and explore, do the split stay with the BI.

Island hopping is a great way to go! Since you are going all that distance why not get a feel for more than one Island? They each have their own unique vibe and its great to be able to experience that.

Thanks everyone... We are the adventurous type and love to get out and hike, snorkel, swim etc... Sounds like there will be a lot to keep us busy!

You should definitely island hop but I would check the Aulani availability SOON. The 7 mo. August booking window has been open for a month already!!

(PS) we always island hop and have done anywhere from 2-4 nights per island. I would say that 2 nights is not long enough - it's too hectic and time consuming and we would never do less than 3 again…so you might want to consider booking 3 n at Aulani...

Thank you! I actually already have 3 nights booked in an ocean view studio just in case. I can cancel and bank the points if I decide to cancel. Really looking forward to this trip!

Good plan! We had been to Maui twice and this past June it was Oahu for us. Since we had liked Maui so much, I was concerned that we wouldn't like Oahu as well, but the gorgeous KoOlina area made our time on Oahu ideal. I think we were spoiled by staying there. Do you have a special dinner planned to celebrate? We had Fathers Day dinner at Makahiki, and loved it!

Not sure yet for dinner celebration. If we do the split stay I'm not sure where we will go on Oahu for a good meal. On Big Island we really want to try Roy's. I've heard its amazing! Any suggestions on food or other cool things to do in 2 days on Oahu?

PS - we loved Maui too! Can't imagine anything being better....

Are you going towards the Waikiki area? If so, I highly recommend Pearl Harbor and getting free tickets ahead of time on the government website. We enjoyed going to Dukes to eat at Waikiki beach, and going out on the catamaran behind the Sheraton there was a highlight . I would not recommend a luau on Oahu if you have been to the Old Lahaina on Maui, it is amazing. I hope they have the luau-like event at Aulani while you're there, the Starlit Hui. We are already looking forward to another trip out there, someday.
