Okay, I'm embarrassed to say that I've been a DVC owner for several years now and a frequenter of these boards. But I've never paid much attention to the threads about trading DVC points out for other timeshares through II.

Here's my question. When someone trades out for another timeshare, does Disney trade out the home resort only or DVC in general. In other words, does home resort matter in the "trading power" of DVC for other timeshare trade outs?

What got me thinking about this is the Hawaii DVC recently announced. Would a Hawaii DVC owner trade out points through II and then those traded points end up in the general DVC pool available to make reservations at any of the DVC resorts?

My guess is I have a complete misunderstanding of how these things work, but I got to thinking about this as I look at DVC Hawaii as possibly attracting more of a traditional timeshare owner who might look to be trading out often. I think those trades offer up the owner's home resort only, don't they?

Probably embarrassing myself with my lack of knowledge, but since I didn't buy DVC to trade out, I never paid attention to those threads.

When you want to trade out, you give up a pre-set number of points (based on a chart provided by DVC). DVC collects these points from various members who have asked to trade out through II.

DVC gives the appropriate number of weeklong reservations to II, to satisfy the exchange requirements for DVCers. They may opt to give these reservations from any resort within the DVC system that they wish, not necessarily your home resort. So your home resort does not affect your "trade power" at all.

This is the same way that most other points-based timeshare systems arrange for exchanges for their owners. It allows the management to keep the most desirable weeks available for other members to reserve directly and give the exchange company only the moderately desirable weeks. The management company will boost the total, averaged trade power of their deposits by occasionally giving a prime week in a studio size unit. But this is why exchangers will rarely (if ever) find 2BR deposits for prime weeks at points-based timeshares available through the exchange companies.

DVC pools the points and trades what they think fits best within the reservation options, usually HH & VB off season and mostly at SSR and OKW otherwise. Given the current set up, those that buy points for DVC HI will have no higher trade power than anyone else.

I'd agree with Lisa in general but some points systems allow you to direct your deposits thus affecting your trade power, points costs and even when your deposit expires.

Thanks...those are two great replies.

I was just wondering if owning Hawaii DVC might be enticing as a better trade option. Based on your comments, it appears that is not the case.

I'm trying to get my mind around this Hawaii DVC thing, and if demand is primarily driven by people who are not WDW regulars then there must be something else that might attract them to "just another timeshare" in Hawaii. I would think that the Disney brand name for resorts will only take them so far.

Thanks very much for the education. :)

But it might give you more options for private exchanging. I've said before that DVC is ill equipped and motivated to compete for timeshare sales. Other companies like Marriott, Westin, Hilton, Sunterra and Wyndham are willing to go after sales both in ways of getting prospects in and in pushing them to buy on the spot. The others also do developer II deposits and preview stays, both tied to aggressively soliciting of sales presentations and a somewhat to very pressured approach to sales presentations. With a resort in a high demand area and pent up demand for something so in demand from existing members, they might squeak by with their usual approach, we'll see. In part it depends on the resort size, IMO.
