Having second thoughts about 'Ohana for Christmas Dinner

'Ohana was our favorite restaurant but we have not been back since 2003. We had planned on having Christmas dinner there, but now with all the changes and the bad reviews we are considering an alternate.

Its not like we will definitely skip 'Ohana all together. We might go on another night. But we don't want to be disapointed on Christmas. Should we choose someplace else and if so where would you suggest. (Dining plan restaurants only)

It's sad to hear about the changes at Ohana as we were also planning to go there for the first time this year. The "draw" of the place was the menu> I'm hoping the new additions/changes are more positive than negative. We'll see.

Hi there! Just returned from the world and ate at Ohanas for the fourth or fifth time. Food was still excellent- the only change on the menu I noted was the AuGratin Potatoes. We LOVED them. Our waiter kept bringing bowls full to our table! Not just your run-of-the-mill potatoes- very flavorful.

The other appetizers remained the same- there was the salad, stir-fry veggies, the wontons, chicken wings and dipping sauces. We thought the food and service were great!!!!!

It seems that some of the changes have not taken place yet. the following is from Todays All Ears newsletter:

...from Sandra: Just came back from six wonderful days at the
Polynesian, but I'm a little upset with the changes at 'Ohana.
On Monday, August 29, the menu was the same, but on Thursday,
September 1, the pineapple with caramel sauce for dessert was
changed to bread pudding with vanilla ice cream. This is a
permanent change, and our waiter also informed us that other
items will be changing. The wontons will go, the fried rice will
go, scalloped potatoes have already replaced the rice, and more
changes are to come. The worst news is that the fire-grilled
shrimp will be replaced with a skillet of shrimp (I don't know
how this will be prepared).

They have changed their menus several times over the past years. It seems that each time people are upset with the changes and vow never to eat there. After a while, others go and have the new items and discover that they are pretty good and soon the old items have been forgotten.

So I would give it a chance and try it out. I have been through these many changes in the past and the food is still as good as before. I do miss some of the items but the replacements are usually just as good.

We love 'Ohana (at least before the changes, haven't been there since last year), but we were there for Christmas dinner - 2000 we said something to the effect of Merry Christmas, etc. to the waiter (who was kind of semi rude and annoying to begin with) after he took the money for our bill and I think his response was something to the effect of yeah, yeah, yeah or yeah, whatever. We were thinking, hey sorry if you don't celebrate Christmas or have to work on Christmas Day but tough ****. Anyways, if you end up going for Christmas dinner, I hope you don't have that sort of experience.

Boy this is a tough one. The reason we chose Ohana was because of the menu, but if it's changing, who knows!!! We looked at Kona's menu after reading the reviews/posts here. My kids seem to like that too, so I'm thinking about booking both restaurants for the same night and as we get closer, we can always cancel the one we won't go to. This way, as more people post info on Ohana, we have an alternative. Does this sound okay to you? I tried to convince my kids to eat at Boma in the AK Lodge, but they were a little frightened by the menu. You know how teenagers are........change is not alsways a good thing!!!!!1

I would highly recommend Boma, even for non-adventurous eaters. There are so many choices that everyone is accomodated. We have two teenagers DS17 and DS15 who really liked Boma and the DS17 is strictly a pizza and burger guy.
