We made $600 at our moving sale. Not bad for a few hours work.

Thanks for all of the helpful hints.

I need help from all of you, especially if you have had a garage sale recently.

We are moving to Florida so we are having a moving sale tomorrow.

I already put an add in the paper and the sale starts early.

I have change, an extension cord so people can test things to see if they work, tables, prices on bright blue painter's tape.

Any other suggestions? I want to sell as much as I can.

What did you find helpful at your sale?

:D

bags or boxes for people to carry away their purchases in; if you have a coffee urn or have access to one, you could offer free coffee (keeps them browsing longer as they sip their coffee!); good, large print, legible signs pointing the way; extra hands to help and extra eyes to watch (and make sure nothing is stolen...it happens....sad, but true!)

Most of all, have fun and good luck with the sale!!

not a moving sale for me but a garage sale. Tied a rope between two trees and hanged up the clothes I had for sale. Also displayed the baby high chair and other nice stuff in the front hoping to draw them in (that didn't work). Plastic sheets or a plan to move merchandise whenever it rains. Like what the previous poster said, everyone will haggle on the prices, so be flexible.

I am having a sale next weekend. Fri & Sat.

I always have a "free table" & a "penny box" visible. That gets them out of the car.
Donate what doesn't sell (except for high $$$). Don't bring anything back in the house.

Good Luck I am setting up things tomorrow! :D

On the same idea as the free coffee. We put free lemonade and water. People really liked it, and stuck around longer. And it cost us pennies to do that. My grammy makes amazing quilts and often will set them up on clothes racks at the end of the driveway to entice people to come look. She's only sold one at the yard sale cuz they're expensive. She's not really trying to sell them, just to attract more people.

Thanks.

I'll try and have some type of beverage or something.

I never thought about having bags for people to put their purchases in. I guess I better get some today.

My best advice is be prepared early. I recently had a moving sale and did not put an ad in the paper. As soon as we started putting things out (around 7 am) we were swarmed with people. My neighborhood must be an area that garage sale lovers frequent. It was chaotic at first - people were asking what I have available as we were still trying to move things out.

Do you have signs for your street and major intersections?

Do you have anyone helping you? My DBF and two friends helped me - I couldn't have done it without them.

Regarding the beverages - I was told by one guy that I should have sold water and coke! Apparently that if fairly common.

Don't try to sale jewelry unless you are with the merchandise at all times. I had a ring and a bracelet disappear. I knew it wasn't a good idea, but I did it anyway. I wish I would have taken them to a pawn shop instead.

I was a little surprised that most of my stuff went for half of what I asked for. Apparently people expect to bargain - which I expected, I just didn't realize the extent to which they expected to bargain. I wanted to get rid of everything so I went with the flow. My moving sale was a success though! I was able to fit everything that didn't sell into my car - for a trip to Good Will. I literally sold about half of my possessions! See, even though my tag says I am a Pack Rat - I'm actually a recovering pack rat. :p

Good luck!

The kids bought some cookies and lemonade to sell and I picked up some small white trash bags to use for merchandise people purchase.

Maybe I'll get some water and coke.

Do you all think I should price each item of clothing or just lump like things in groups at a certain price?

I also picked up 2 huge garage sale signs at Home Depot and we will put those up at the nearest major intersections.

Thanks again.
