Booked cbr because of the dining plan, thought it would be easier:confused3

We are renting a car, so we do not need trans. to the parks. I keep looking at the resort photos and the rooms just seem so expensive for what you get.

I am thinking we could spend less for a nicer hotel offsite and then eat wherever we want and end up spending the same amount of money.

Why is it so hard to decide?

Taking the kids swimming, be back to check out any advice. Thanks

You hit all the reasons to go off site. You already have a car. You know the space will be much better off site. The cost will be less (unless you really jump up the size of the unit beyond 2 bedroom). You save money on food and get to eat at real restaurants not the so-so food like places on site.

Go off site. You will save & be happier.

We are so spoiled by off site. We have a timeshare and always get a two bedroom/two bath. I love the kitchen and in house washer and dryer. I do not feel like I am at home with the cooking and washing, because when I do get home my life is easier because I was able to wash clothes. We love to eat breakfast at the condo and even maybe dinner. We still book reservations at our favorite Disney restaurants. Don't pay for less!!

We just returned from a two bedroom at Bonnet Creek. It was wonderful. Great pools and so many free activities for kids. From our unit, we could see the rooftops of CBR!

There are a lot of people on the DIS who say they would rather sleep in a janitor's closet at one of the All-Star resorts than stay off-site. I am not one of those people. ;)

We have stayed both on and off site. Truthfully, the only way I will stay on-site now is at one of the deluxe resorts, and even then we use our own car to get to the parks. Standing in line for an hour waiting for a bus after a day at the parks is not my idea of a fun time.

The quality of the rooms is so much better off-site. I don't care if we only use the room to sleep in - I'm picky about where I sleep! :rotfl:

I also like being able to go off-site to eat. Spending $75 for lunch and over $100 for dinner for a sit-down meal gets real old, real fast. There are so many restaurants within a very short distance of WDW that we can get a nice, relaxing, quality meal for at least half of what it costs on-site.

As for missing the "magic", it doesn't take anything away from our experience by staying off-site. If anything, I'm less stressed out because I'm not having a stroke every time we're handed the food bill and I get to retreat from the non-stop action for a little while.

I stayed off site once, and hated it!
Yes, I felt like I missed out on the Disney magic.

If you think you will take full advantage of the dining plan, as in being brave and trying new foods, then I think you should go with that. If you have kids that are picky eaters and are only going to eat chicken and mac/cheese the whole time, then you may be overpaying by staying there and using the DDP.

Don't forget that with staying on site you get to take care of EMH which can come in handy for obvious reasons. Also, when we stayed off site we had to deal with annoying bus times...but we didn't have a car.

It's really personnal opinion. I LOVE not worrying about driving, cooking, laundry etc. Makes me really feel like I'm OUT of the real world.

Have fun :cool1:

I've done both. And, you're right: Disney charges a lot of money if you just compare room-to-room vs. offsite hotels. You aren't just paying for the room, though. You are paying for an immersive experience. Some people place a very high value on that experience, and others don't care so much.

You won't know which way you fall until you try it. We're in the "don't care so much" camp. We also don't consider hotel rooms a vacation---I want at least separate sleeping spaces for the adults and the kids, and we find having a washer/dryer, kitchen, etc. a real convenience on vacation. I don't "cook", but it's nice to be able to have breakfast in the unit, with real dishes, without having to get out of our pajamas and go to some food court somewhere.

Comparing a 2BR condo at Old Key West to one of the nicer, well-located offsite resorts, we find the onsite experience a little bit nicer, but not so much nicer that (a) we'd stay in a mere hotel room for the four of us just for "the magic", or (b) spend thousands of dollars more to stay onsite. When we can get a timeshare exchange into DVC, we will take it. Otherwise, we're just as happy to stay in one of the many wonderful resorts just outside the gates (and, in one case, within them.)

I don't sign up for the dining plan, ever. We always spend less just eating where, when, and what we want than the appropriate dining plan would cost.. We tend not to quite get one TS meal per day, and the more we eat, the more likely some of them are less expensive. Some people like the pre-paid aspect of the dining plan, but to me that just doesn't matter.

My observation so far is that people who have tried both an onsite hotel room and an offsite condo, townhome, or pool home, generally find the extra space and amenities of the offsite locations a true value for the price compared to what they are getting in Disney's resorts. Not everyone, true. But, I know a *lot* of die-hard onsite fans who tried the condo thing and really really liked it, and only a few people who found it not to their liking. When comparing apples to apples (hotel room onsite vs. hotel room off; condo onsite vs. condo off) the verdict is a little more mixed, and it usually comes down to how painful the hotel bill is for your personal circumstances.

In the end, it's hard to go wrong either way.

Don't forget to figure $14 a day to park if you are off-site. If money were no object I would always stay on-site. Money is an object, so we are off-site (two rooms at the Embassy Suites LBV) this trip, with a small amount of time spent at CSR. CBR is my least favorite resort--been there twice--but I am sure the new pool is great. Pete Werner who founded this site (DIS) reviewed the CBR recently. He did NOT like the new pirate themed rooms and asked to be moved to a regular room. You can dig around and find that review if interested.

I have done both, and personally I prefer staying onsite just for the Disney Dining plan. Once I made all my ADR's it was so easy to have a plan for each day and know that everything was paid for! I haven't stayed CBR, but I did take a tour of it last trip, and was really impressed with the grounds, the eating areas, the pool, etc. My next trip is off-site, (a family member has a timeshare and we are staying with them) and I already miss the idea of not being able to stay in a Disney resort. If you are looking for a larger room, with cooking facilities, by all means stay off-site. If you want more of a Disney imersion, with the ddp, stay onsite. Have fun with whatever you decide.

Thanks so much for your insight everyone. I feel like a yo-yo right now.
I should not let planning a vacation cause such much dilemma!!

I have a lot to think about, thanks for giving me some good advice!

We have stayed both onsite and off. I am honestly a fan of both lol. However, we are going back this fall and even though we stay at the parks from opening to closing, my children (all teenaged) said they did NOT want to stay in a small cramped room so we are staying offsite at WH. I am looking forward to it and do not feel we will lose any disney "magic" as we did NOT the first time we stayed offsite. Regardless you have to do what is best for your family. I know when I start to question what I really want to do then that usually means I wasn't happy with it in the first place ----clear as mud :).

pocuita, I just wanted to tell you one more thing. When you post a question on the "Orlando Hotels and Attractions" board of the DIS--you will usually get far more advice to stay off-site. If you post your question on the "Disney Resorts" board, almost overwhelmingly you will be encouraged to stay on-site. I am in the on-site camp in theory, but because of my pocketbook I am staying off-site for most of our trip this time.

I just wanted to point out that if you ask the same question on the two different boards you will get different answers. Good luck with your decision.

I have done both and preferred off site. You can get much more hotel or resort for your money off Disney property. Also, while the dining plan is nice, you probably can eat just as cheaply or cheaper even off site.

we've doen both and truly for the comfort of a larger room, I'd stay offsite. Especially if you have a car.

How long will you be there and when are you going?

If you are going to be there for a week or more, you and your family are going to be in close quarters for a long time in a hotel room. If you go during rainy season and are stuck inside, this will be especially important to consider the issue of time alone.

I can get a clean, well-furnished, nicely decorated 3BR condo for $700/week in high season at Windsor Hills.

We stayed at the Poly for $400/nite several years ago. We planned a couple of days at the resort when it just poured the whole day. We played cards and watched TV together for a few hours, but after a while family members wanted a nap and others wanted to read, etc. No fights broke out, but a little individual time would have made for a nicer day.

Thanks everyone for the great advice!

we are staying for 4 nights then switching to nick hotel for 3 nights. Part of me wants a more deluxe stay for the first 4 nights since we will be moving to a nick (nothing against it, just not what I would call relaxing/deluxe).

I wish I could just make the decision and be done.... but I keep pondering it over and over and over.... you get the picture:crazy2:

If we are staying for a full week, I almost always rent a two or three bedroom condo from an offsite timeshare resort. I love the extra space, laundry, kitchen, and resorts have great ammenities. I usually rent from timeshare owners on sites like Redweek.com and TUG2.net. The cost for a two bedroom/two bath is usually about the same for me as a Disney moderate resort. Even though they are a little more expensive than rental houses, I usually prefer the timeshare condos as they have a nice resort feel that my family and I love. I've stayed onsite a few times too. The more modestly priced onsite accomodations while perfectly nice just didn't thrill me that much and weren't that close to the parks -- I'd pick the offsite condo ahead of these. Now I do have to say (not normally in my budget) that a few nights at a onsite deluxe is pretty cool. I do enjoy that. I'm, though, really like to travel and have a limited annual travel budget, so that means I make cost/value decisons regularly for travel. And usually the offsite condo ends up being a yes and the onsite deluxe hotel is a no (really, fun, but too expensive for my budget).

I'm in the same boat as you! I don't know what to do either. DD wants to stay on Disney property for the "magic" of being there. But, to me, I'm used to staying off-site and I'm happy with that. We will most likely rent a car, but that is not certain yet. It will be just DD and I for a Mother/Daughter birthday trip. I really want to make this trip very special, but not spend a fortune. I also considered staying on Disney property for 2 nights and then switching off-site for another 4.

Drkaito: for just two people, a hotel room *could* work. It's not my first choice, but it could work. Give it a try, and see how you like it. Personally, I'd look to the Mods for a stay like that, especially if you think you might not rent a car.

We are staying off site this trip. With 5 in the party off site was just financially a better choice. And my aunt who is going with us sleeps with a machine at night, (it can be noisy). We needed our own rooms. I'll admit, I'm a little nervous about off site, but at the same time I'm excited. We are going to still be at Disney!
