I just saw this on E! There IS no such man! It's an anonymous name, scrambled to read The Alias Man. Seems that every movie MUST have a director named in the credits so the directors who have obviously bad movies become either Alan or Allen Smithee.

I suspect he directed quite a few of the movies my son dragged me to!

I believe that I heard somewhere that the name was invented by directors that were blacklisted during the McCarthy era.
