Have you relaxed on sanitizing things?

Because produce is porous so while you’re scrubbing it with soap, the soap is being absorbed into the fruit. That bit won’t wash off during the rinsing process. When you eat that it can cause issues.

If you’re literally using one drop of dish soap then you’re probably not going to have issues but still not great over time. Most people don’t use just a drop of soap or are filling the awful advice to soak produce in soapy water. You don’t want gastro issues from eating soap 🤢

As a general practice it’s a bad idea. Also water can’t really remove all the pesticides for the same reason, but that’s a whole different safety issue.

ok, gotcha, thank you for the reply! Generally we use water and a vinegar rinse. That’s what we use on berries, which are obviously a very porous fruit so I see what you mean about it absorbing soap, and that’s why I would never use soap on them. I guess I didn’t even think of it being a problem on apples because the thin seems so thick and I just use a tiny dab and rinse very well. I will just use the vinegar/water spray on that from now on, or water alone

I mentioned up thread that I use body wash in my soap dispensers. It’s made a huge difference. Are you willing to rub a teeny bit of olive oil onto your hands occasionally? Even if you only let it stay 10-15mins and then wash it will help.

Olive oil? I can try, think I can stand 15 minutes before I start freaking out. :scared1: Thanks for the tip- and also the tip about body wash in the soap dispensers. I'll try that, too.

I didn't do any of the decontaminating processes with regard to groceries or mail. I wash my hands if I go out/after bathroom and when I was able to find sanitizer started sanitizing in the car after shopping. I can't imagine washing my hands a dozen times a day. If I'm sheltering in place what am I touching??
I think I normally wash my hands a dozen times a day. :D Before eating, before cooking/preparing food, after each bathroom trip, after doing anything outdoors that results in dirty hands---say gardening or basketball, and upon returning home from certain outings, etc. That's got to add up to at least a dozen times per day, I would think. :)

For those having an issue with handwashing drying out your hands, I highly recommend either Meyer or Love Beauty Planet hand soaps. They smell great and they're great on my hands - which considering I'm diabetic and perpetually dehydrated (according to my doc) that's saying something!

(Hint: body wash makes for great hand soap and doesn’t tear up your hands.)

My son is high risk, so I won't be easing up on any sanitation rituals yet. 30 minutes spent sanitizing and putting away the groceries is well worth it to me.

I didn’t do any wiping of groceries etc ever, mail comes in and gone through like it always has. I have always been a germ a phob when it comes to people touching me. At my job I come in contact with a lot of people and hand shaking. My boss is a bigger germa phob than me and as soon as someone shakes our hand there is hand sanitizer within reach! I am really happy with people keeping six feet away and wouldn’t mind that part staying around!

To be honest I think it is possible that my escalation in hand washing and using Clorox wipes may never go away. But we have been huge hand sanitizers since we took our kids on their first cruise in 2002. My wife always had a travel bottle in her purse, and we have a bottle in every car, and have for years.
