Have you read "Running with Scissors"?

by Augusten Burroughs? Did you like it? I just finished it and didn't like it at all! I saw nothing humorous in it - just very pathetic that people can fall through the cracks like that. I can't believe they actually made a movie based on this book. What is your opinion?

It's weird -- I can't say that I really enjoyed it, but it was kinda like a bloody car accident -- I couldn't look away. I finished it and my friend, who wanted to borrow it when I was finished, asked me how I liked it, and I told her I just wasn't sure!
It made me feel sad that there were kids growing up in this environment and I suppose it is a tribute to all that he overcame. I just kind of feel ambiguous about it.
I didn't see the movie, but heard it was pretty bad.

I share your opinion. I found the whole story pathetic, not humorous in the least.

I think I'll stick to Sophie Kinsella books for a while. At least Shopaholic and Baby comes out in February.

I too HATED this book...I would not recommend wasting your time. In my opinion it would not surprise me if the author seriously stretched a little bit of truth like the author of "A Million Little Pieces". I found this book very disturbing, a bit sickining and not at all what I expected.

Loved it!! Loved Dry even more....

My childhood was a bit odd, I related in a strange way to parts of it...I suggested my sister read it, she loved it as well.

My feelings exactly.

I liked it. Dry was even better. Was it disturbing in parts? Yep, but it's a memoir. The movie actually skipped over a lot of the darker stuff.

To me reading a book should be entertaining and fun. I Love Sue Monk Kidd. Her books secret life of bees and The Mermaid Chair were my two favorite reads this year!:)

Did it really Rigs? I havent been able to catch the movie, it didnt come out around here. I wondered how some of it would be handled...

I made the mistake of reading these two books in a row.

I'll just stick to fluff for a while.

I read it and found it quite weird but I wanted to keep reading. I don't know if I would recommend it to anyone.

Yeah. Very art house, too much so, and I like arty movies. We saw it at a double feature with Little Miss Sunshine. Anyway.... it's much more teen appropriate than the book is. I'm not going to say exactly what was left out because I know kids/teens read these boards. But if you've read it, I'm betting you know what I'm talking about.

i describe it as 'a pornographic car wreak'. something you don't want to admit looking at, but your interest/curriosity gets the better of you-and then you find yourself glancing back.

i got it to read on a vacation-found it poorly written in the begining, but then the structure was better so i could get through it. as for the story-iiiick! but i can't say i was surprised by the behaviour of the 'doctor'-i've known too many psych. professionals that had the most screwed up and twisted family dynamics ever.

i have been tempted since reading it to hit the few 'self help' bookstores in sonoma to see if i can figure out which one is owned by the one woman in the book:rotfl:

It was just pathetic. Needless to say, much must have been toned down for the movie, or it would be XXX.

There's a lot of strange stuff out there geared towards young adults...has anyone ever read anything by Chuck Palahniuk (Fight Club, Lullaby, Choke, Haunted...lots more)? There's a twisted dude.

I didn't mind the book, although I liked "Dry" and "Sellavision" by the author more. I would watch the movie version of "RWS" if it was on TV and I was bored.

I liked it. Easy reading. Held my attention.

Like a little snack:rotfl:

Two marvelous books - but child abuse, sexual infidelity, and self mutilation aren't exactly entertaining and fun!!!!!

I liked all of the Burroughs books -Dry was the best, in my opinion. I do believe he has admitted to a little monkeying around with the book. I read an interesting article, maybe in Vanity Fair or The New Yorker, recently about the "real" family he lived with, and how hurt and damaged they were by his version of the events, which they felt were wildly exaggerated in many cases.
