We used American Van Lines when we moved from NJ to FL. We didn't have one problem...it was great! So I just figured they all work like this. Ha! On another move I used United. Boxes were lost, they gave me a hassle when I submitted a claim. I WILL NEVER USE UNITED AGAIN!! Used a little local company...White Lion for a move within the same town. It was okay.
Hopefully, in a short amount of time I'll be moving to Virginia!! And I'm going to use American Van Lines right off the bat. Forget estimates blah, blah, blah. Good luck!
Also a military wife, and I agree with EVERYTHING kadaten said. I love letting others pack, but I always pack the valuables/non-replaceables first. In fact, since they're coming on Monday, I better start... The biggest tip I have is make sure everything is ready. Like kadaten said, empty the trash!! My movers came at 8 am and packed my coffee pot while it was still hot!!
Oh, and if you have pets, get them out of there. The doors will be open and people will be coming and going the entire day. Last time we had to lock the boys in the bathroom, which was difficult! Now we have their crate which we can put them in safely...just need to watch the mover so they don't pack the crate!

Pretty much....9 years in and 5 total moves. Four of them were in the first 5 years!
Moved ourselves the first time...NEVER AGAIN!!! DH knows we will never move unless someone else does it and pays for it!! Too much hassle!! I'd never moved until I married him....what a change! Now, I get kinda antsy at the 18 month mark, wondering when we will move so I can decorate another house But that's the only part of moving I enjoy....
