Have you ever witnessed this while eating out.

Went to a sandwich shop for lunch yesterday, they guy I was with ordered a water. No problem. He then grabbed some lemon packs and put the lemon juice in the water followed by sweet and low. I guess he made his own lemon aid. I have to admit that it was embarrassing to me. Next time I would rather by him a lemon aid if he's going to do that. He is from the great state of Arkansas, maybe they do that there I don't know, didn't want to ask. To me it was very strange.

Wonderful sandwich shop though.

I have a relative that does this all the time. It used to embarrass me a lot. Now I just ignore it and I'm extra friendly to our server.

I have never witnessed this personally, however, I have read on the Budget Board about people doing this. ;)

I actually do that at some places. I get water with lemon and put in some sugar.

I do this at places that either don't have lemonade (all soda or alchohol) or where the lemonade is way too strong (I perfer the slight lemon flavor). I would gladly pay for the drink, I guess I never thought it would bother anyone. Why does it bother you? The only thing I can think of from the way you described it is that it seems cheap? I wouldn't mind if they charged me for it even I just don't see the point in drinking something I don't like as much when I could make my own.

Would people that order water and then put in one of those flavor packets for water bottles bother you too? I know quite a few people that do this as well.

For me the difference is that people bring in those flavor packets and aren't using the restaurants.

If the restaurant served diet lemonade as a choice, he should have ordered it. If he wanted lemonade, but they didn't have a choice that met with his diet choices, I'm OK with him working with what was provided to him. I would have an issue if he ordered extra lemons that he wasn't willing to pay for to fix his drink.

Honestly in that case I would rather resteraunts just allow this and charge us for it... It really isn't a budget issue for me I just don't like soda most of the time and some places really only have soda, coffee, and alchohol, none of which I really like.

I've never seen a place that doesn't have water. :confused3

yes I have seen it and yes I think it is rude and yes I would be embarrassed if I were eating with someone who did this.

I think it is mostly people being cheap. I 't buy the "I wanted diet lemonade" excuse. I drink Coke (never Pepsi) or unsweetened brewed ice tea. If neither is available I get water (or choose to eat elsewhere in the first place). I don't bring in my own Coke from somewhere else because that would be rude (but not quite as bad as taking the items the restaurant provides to go with certain drinks like tea and coffee and using them to create my own free beverage).

ETA: yes it bothers me when people bring their own flavour packets to add to the water too. Or their own salad dressings. It is basically saying you feel the eatery does not do a good job of providing you with decent things so you have to bring your own--in which case why go there?

I have a friend who does this and she if very up front with it being b/c she is cheap. :rotfl: I try not to let it bother me since it's her behavior and not mine.:flower3:

I've been known to order water with lemon wedges. Is this wrong?

My MIL and SIL do this and it drives me nuts!

But what can you do??

I've done this once or twice. Actually usually I just put lemon in my water with no sweetener. I don't really see a problem with it.

I've never seen anyone do it. I do have a friend that gets extra lemon wedges because she loves lemon flavored water. She's not being cheap though. She just loves lemon in her water.

The world would be a much better place if people would just not get bent out of shape over the insignificant behavior of others.

FWIW, I don't do this but I have relatives who do and I still love them to pieces.

I've never seen this and I don't think it would actually bother me. Life's too short!:goodvibes

I used to belong to a waitressing message board when I worked as a waitress and that was always one of the big pet peeves of servers. People too cheap to order a drink, asking for water and lemons then using the restaurant's lemons and their sugar/sweet & low packets to make their own "lemonade."

I personally never saw it being done. I did see some who would ask for water then use one of their own Crystal Lite drink sticks and pour that in. Many on the waitressing message board hated that too, but that one didn't bother me. If they weren't going to order a drink, and just wanted water and used their own additives and not the restaurant's, I didn't care.
