Have you ever seen a CM approach someone smoking in a non-designated area?

I was on a bus pulling up to a stop and the driver opened the door and yelled at someone standing at the bus stop to put his cigarette out! I was really surprised because I had never seen a cast member do that.

Hey fellow Disney lovers! :confused3 Here's my spin:

People confuse what secnd hand smoke really is...and when its at levels that harm you..most people just see a smoker ahead and are angry, before they even smelled it...and think they will be harmed by walking past...others just get a whiff on the rolling breeze that its nearby and claim they are harmed, being killed, didnt ask to smoke, annoyed, put off etc. That is based on your tolerance; which we all know tolerance is on an individual basis.
Smoke out in the air simply isnt going to harm you anymore than the handfulls of other air pollutants. Walking past a smoking section in a park out in the open isnt harming you, it's based on personal issues. You dont like the smell period. You dont like smokers period. Thats not a health issue, thats a tolerance issue.

Its all about propeganda: There's a similiar issue regarding paraffin candles in that they are harmfull ...yes they do emit carcinogens and that claim is also fact, BUT noone ever seems to realize that it takes alot of contact at sustained rates to raise the level to the harmful stage. Merely burniing one here and there is NOT going to harm you, but nevertheless all you hear about in the public campaign is they are filled with toxins. People think one darn candle will fill them up with carcinogens. Its all on the spin people give things..how incited the news and lobbiests can make you..the headlines and big newsleads just says "the dangers of candles"..carginogens and doom and gloom...that was a real good propeganda campaign.

Alot of the complaining you hear has alot more to do with the fact someone is merely smoking and you dont like it. I know people just like this who have admitted it doesnt bother them, smokers just irritate them so they will complain. Im not like that so I cannot understand it. Alot of things bother me like children that are running around jumping in and out of the hottubs at resorts but geez I figure why bother, its just their vacations too. Thats what they want to do so why put them out you know?
Im just worried because people have a long history of just using issues to force their own beliefs on others.

An ex-smoker here and his WDW tale;

I went to MK for the first time with my best friend, my wife and 5 year old DD. I never smoked in front of my child and was always considerate of non-smokers.

DW and DD needed the rest room and my friend and I felt this would be a good time for a quick cigarette. We went to a spot well off the beaten path near the old 20KL...both completely unaware of the designated smoking area rule.

No sooner had we lit up then a rock we were standing next to opened up and out stepped a CM...a door just appeared in the rock...amazing. We were told politely about the smoking policy. We really had no idea. The CM pointed out the nearest spot and off we went.

DW of course laughed at us for making trouble not 20 minutes into our first trip to WDW.

To this day I can't figure out what the CM's were doing inside a rock that had a door and how well it was concealed.

Now thats a story. I wonder how many other doors like that they have hidden around...smjj

Have you ever seen a CM approach someone smoking in a non-designated area?
Never.

And smoking can be spun or justified any way anyone wishes. Problem is it flat out stinks. Peee----you.....

I too am a smoker. And It is a bad habit that I am trying to break . I am good a quitting but staying quit isn't so easy. I get very upset when I see people smoking outside the designated areas. My Dh and I spend lots of time looking on the map for the smoking areas. I think it is very thoughtless for smokers especially around kids to abuse the priviledge. They set up these areas so we can enjoy Disney without hurting innocent people while we smoke. We will not even go a little out of the area. I wish the people would think of others they could be harming by not going to the designated areas. There all a lot of fragile ill children that go to Disney as a last wish. The smoke could make these children even sicker and ruin their magical moments and for their families. And it is rude. I choose to smoke. though I hope by my next trip I won't be spending half my time looking for the designated spots. It is my problem not others and they do not need to breathe in my smoke. So please if you smoke be sensitive to others especially the children. Go to the allowed spots. Then everyone will be happy.

We were at Hollywood & Vine in January. There was a couple who had a little boy (around 3-4 y/o) that sat under the table and screamed the whole time we were there. The kid never shut up, but the parents totally tuned him out and ignored him. At one point they even got up and both went back to the buffet, leaving him under the table. Other than getting a little louder with his screaming the kid didn't even respond to being left alone. There is no way they could see him while they were at the buffet (although everyone could hear him). Everyone around them was glaring at them to do something with the kid, but they just continued to ignore him. Anyway after they finished eating the dad lit up a cigarette, at which point the waiter walked over and told him it was a nonsmoking restaraunt. The dad got really snotty and told the waiter he always smoked after a meal. The waiter continued to tell them no smoking was allowed and told them where the nearest designated smoking area was. Finally the dad put out his cigarette, they then finally grabbed the screaming kid out from under the table and left. I thought it was funny they would leave to smoke a cigarette, but wouldn't take their screaming child out so others could enjoy their meal.

Who would have wanted to take the screaming kid? ;) :rotfl: But with parents like that, there was probably reason to scream.

My daughter and I have asthma  , cigarette smoke triggers attacks in both of us. I recently went to Disney with a very good friend of mine, she is a smoker. She was smoking EVERYWHERE! I was appalled by this. I would ask her to PLEASE go to a smoking area but she continued to ignore me. Several times a CM would ask her to please use the designated smoking areas. Inside I was like "YES!" I would say 6 out of 10 times she would actually go to one. I wil NEVER go with her again. It was embarrasing and I was constantly puffing on an inhaler. You would think after me asking, CM's asking and me puffing away, she would get it, nope. Just my 2 cents worth!

Like any other group...a few smokers can be self absorbed and totally insensative to people around them. Because of threads like this I was totally tuned in to where the smokers were on my trip last week. The vast majority were in the designated areas but there were more (than I had noticed on previous trips) just strolling along in the crowds smoking away. In my first 5 minutes at MK I spotted four people smoking in the crowds. I saw many more over the course of my stay but saw no one enforcing the rules.

I don't blame you for not wanting to go with her again. She must know you have astma. Did she ever explain to you why she ignored you and the cast members?

I am surprised you still call her a "very good friend". Sounds like to me she was no friend at all! ;)

I have seen CMs address smokers in non-smoking areas. I saw it twice on last trip at end of Jan 05. One smoker put her cigarette out. The second smoker did not and I watched the CM call for another CM to "readdress" the issue (The second CM was a much larger man). Caught my curiosity so I stayed around. The second smoker with the larger CM, dropped his cigarette to the ground and rubbed in into the pavement! Addictions amaze me.

Too bad the larger CM did not drop the second guy to the ground and rub him into the pavement! ;)

That is your opinion! Many people cannot tolerate even a wiff of smoke or they have asthma attacks. No, maybe it is no worse for some people than breathing other polutents, but for others it is... that is just selfish on the smokers part. It is not too much to ask a smoker to be considerate and go to the smoking designated areas

We just returned from a 3 day trip with my older son, his wife and their daughter. Both my son and his wife smoke and both were told at least once over the weekend to please enjoy their smokes in the designated areas:-)

As a non-smoker, I loved it.....and it took them awhile to 'get the hang of it' LOL

All in all, I think it's great. I for one don't appreciate having to breath smoke.

Yep - I saw it twice.. Once in MK and once in Epcot.. The CM in Epcot was particularly nasty to the offender right off the bat.. I was so stunned over the CM's attitude, I actually hung around for a bit to see what would transpire.. The offender clearly did not realize that he was in a non-designated smoking area and kept trying to apologize, while the CM continued to scream at him and wave her arms around in the air.. I actually felt sorry for the guy - but amazingly enough, he never raised his voice or got nasty at all - in spite of the CM's atrocious behavior..

That's your opinion. You really shouldn't judge others situtations especially when you don't know how they can be affected by cigarette smoke. I have very bad asthma and cigarette smoke can cause me to have an asthma attack, it's not because I just don't like it. It is a health issue. How can you compare kids bothering you by running around to cigarette smoke which can cause many people to have very bad reactions? That makes no sense. I think people should just be considerate of others and obey the rules of the park.

This thread has run it's course. I'm closing it.
