Have You Ever Made a Costume Bridal Veil?

I need some help with this.

My daughter is being some sort of dead bride for Halloween and has most of her costume together. I offered to "make" the veil as we could find one to buy that wasn't really expensive.

After a few google searches I came up with suggestions on how to hot glue the tulle to a headband. Well, I've got the tulle now and the headband but suddenly this doesn't look like it's going to work out.

In order to get the veil full enough, it seems that the tulle is going to bunch up on the underside of the headband. If I glue it to the top, I think my hideous handwork is going to be too noticeable.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

If she's going as a 'dead bride' then maybe
*you can get some grey & black ribbon and make a bow or
*cover the hot glue up with some spider-webbing
*any combination of the above (feel free to include some plastic spiders if needed)

agnes!

Thanks! So you think I should glue it to the top of the headband?

I made one and just laid the tulle out along the headband, safety pinned it in place where I wanted it then used the same color thread to stitch it around the headband.

Well I have this white, vinyl covered headband that I'm using but I suppose I could go out and buy one of a different type (it's what I had laying around).

Were you planning on the headband showing or not? I didn't actually pin or stitch anything TO the headband, just around it. The sewing went around the headband and was pulled tight. You might need a dot of strong glue at each end just to keep it from slipping but it should be fine for a costume, especially since dead brides usually aren't looking for perfection!

The instructions I read said to hot glue to the underside of a rigid-type headband so I was thinking the headband would show. I was going to wrap the head band in white ribbon, then hot glue on. Now it's not looking like a good idea because the tulle is going to bunch up along the underside of the head band and probably won't allow the head band to sit properly. I have a 2 yard length of tulle and the width is probably 60 inches, so you can imagine how bunched up that 60 inches is. But if I cut the tulle in half, then the veil seems like it's not full enough.

My tulle was across the top of the headband. When it was all fluffed and bunched in DD's hair it really didn't show how I had put it together, especially since it is dark when we go ToT!

Thanks. I think I'm going to go out tomorrow and look for a different type of headband. What type did you use?

I think what you have should be fine. I actually had a fancy metal one with sparkles, that looked like a bridal tiara sort of thing, but my dd wanted to be a beautiful sparkly bride and it was only a few dollars.

Glue it to the top then cover that with something...I liked the PP's idea of black ribbon or fake spiders.

Don't hot glue it, just whip stitch it. Make a running stitch more or less the width of the tulle, pull it up to gather. Then put the gathered tulle on top of the headband, whip stitch in place (around the headband--go in at the top, under the headband, up on the other side, repeat). Then glue a piece of ribbon over the top of the whip stitching. Should work, no need to buy anything else.

That sounds good too. I do think I will need a different head band though because I would like to put a stitch through the head band at some point and the vinyl cover over the hard plastic makes that nearly impossible.

I was going to suggest using hair combs and stich the tulle on there...but the headband thing would work too.

Only one problem with hair combs. My daughter has that fine, slippery hair. She's never been able to hold a hair comb so I have to get something with some real holding power. Curse that fine hair!!!!

I agree with whipstitching it to the top of the headband, then get a cheap sprig of white (or black?) silk flowers, and stitch them onto the messy part of the tulle/headband connection. Very bridal looking.
