A girl I work with called me this morning and said she had Mr. Smith "behind her" and can he get on Mr. Jones' (my boss's) calendar for a meeting.
I said, "What do you mean, he's 'behind' you? He's standing in back of you?"
She said "No, he's holding on the other line. I needed to find out for him if Mr. Jones can see him on Wednesday"?
Well, I have never heard of this phrase "he's behind me" when referring to someone on hold on another telephone line. Let me say, this girl is from Wisconsin -- maybe it's a Wisconsin thing???
