A girl I work with called me this morning and said she had Mr. Smith "behind her" and can he get on Mr. Jones' (my boss's) calendar for a meeting.

I said, "What do you mean, he's 'behind' you? He's standing in back of you?"

She said "No, he's holding on the other line. I needed to find out for him if Mr. Jones can see him on Wednesday"?

Well, I have never heard of this phrase "he's behind me" when referring to someone on hold on another telephone line. Let me say, this girl is from Wisconsin -- maybe it's a Wisconsin thing???

LOL!! Never heard of that either!

I can't get used to people saying they are standing "on line" when they mean IN line! I want to say "What do you mean? You are standing on the internet?"

The only time I've heard of that phrase is with the holding pattern "heirarchy" they sometimes have at businesses. You know, the "You're call will be handeled in the order in which it was received." scenerio. If I called at 5:00 and Mr. Smith called at 5:01, he'd be "behind me" in the holding structure. I've never really heard it used in your specific situation though.

The only meaning I've ever associated with that was when someone is "supporting" you or your cause, etc..
