A mandatory work place Christmas party on a weekend night?

And is it even legal?

I'm fuming! I only work 3 days a week now (Tues. thru Thurs.) so didn't know anything about this until a co-worker emailed me tonight. The company we work for is having a Christmas Party at a local hotel next Saturday night and it is mandatory that all employees attend!

Well guess what? My granddaughter is coming next Friday night and will be here till Sunday night so we can do all of our Christmas activities and there is NO WAY I'm leaving her to go to that party!

Nothing takes priority over her and I would just like to see what they're going to do about it!!!!!

Wow, that is short notice! I don't blame you for being po'ed.

I don't know if it's legal, however it is MANDATORY that they pay you, if they state it's mandatory for you to attend, same as a training, meeting etc...

I personally have not attended these, that are "Mandatory" I've emailed my boss and just said, Sorry, I have prior plans that can not be cancelled. In your case, I'd say...

Boss,

I just received an email from "Sue" regarding the mandatory christmas party this coming Saturday. Unfortunatly this is the first I have heard of it, and will be unable to attend due to company arriving Saturday. I hope you all have a great time, and I am sorry I will miss the fun-filled event.

Thanks for your understanding.

Worker.

I have missed trainings, and meetings that are mandatory before....Must be I either have a very understanding boss, or he realizes that nobody would do what I do for the little money I do it for!

listen to you complain, I bet you get drunk and dance with a lamp shde on your head at the party:wizard:

I have never heard of such a thing as a mandatory Christmas party and I don't blame you for being upset. Unless you are being paid to attend the party, I do not see how your attendance can be mandated. Who needs that kind of additional pressure during the holidays?

I think DH's was just strongly suggested. I would be upset if they told him he HAD to go, and I doubt if he would do it. The only reason we are going this year is because all of management is shifting so I guess its supposed to be some big ceremony type deal (I dunno). Unfortunately we lost the owner of the company this past year.

After I bought everything for both of us to wear DH asks me if I really want to go (its Saturday). GRRRRRRRR men now he is making me feel like its ME who wanted to go??? I admit I do want to see Gillette Stadium. I have no idea why its at a football stadium.

Do you still have to go if you're Jewish or Muslim? A "Christmas" party seems a little assumptive to me.

I had an evening dinner that was to be attended unless you had extinuating (sp?) circumstances. DDs had gymnastics and DH works evenings, I was not getting a babysitter. My boss was very understanding.
