Been through many hurricanes as well as a few typhoons (lived in Japan). Actually been through a 3. My house survived Andrew but I was not at home (at WDW). I refused to come home to ride out a hurricane. Glad I did. Had to go through the aftermath though with 2 weeks of no electricity and 3 months of no phones (bought a cell) and a year of no cable.

Tiggerlover, I've lived in Miami-Dade County for nearly 30 years. Maybe I need to ask the same question. :D DH has been here for 56 years.

1985 Gloria passed right over Long Island. Lost power for about 24 hours and a few branch's off trees. We had just bought the House and Wife was 7 months pregnant at the time. Eye of the Storm passed right over the house very cool. We were lucky Storm picked up speed and passed over the Island Quickly. Due to the black-out last year, Today is the Aniversary and predictions of a very active storm season, bought a 3000 Watt Generator, Pepboys $299.00. Last year lost about $500 worth of food.

We have had several come by CT in my life time but nothing like Hurricane Andrew that we saw get its start while we were on our honeymoon in Jamaica. The storm was so dark and creepy and at that point it wasn't what it was going to become!

Our flight home stopped over in Miami before heading home to CT and my SIL met us and asked if we wanted to go eat or go see her home....I had never been there....we opted for food because we were starving and I remember saying to her that we would come back soon to visit her again. Bad choice on my part!

4 days later Andrew blasted in and demolished her home (she was in the Homestead area). She is a nurse and was at her hospital at the time the storm hit. It was like a third world country there! The closest lodging to her hospital job was over 2hrs. each way.

She did rebuild but never was comfortable there again. She moved to CT this year and I am sure as hurricane season is really heating up she is glad to be here.

I lived two hours inland when Isabel hit....it was a Category 5.

We've been through many here in Louisiana and like Skuttle said, Andrew was the worst. It actually followed us from Florida. We made it home just in time to get a few last minute items that we could find. Our power was out for 3 days. Just across the street from where we used to live (my grandma still lives there now),well, their power was out for 2 weeks!

The thing I remember most about Andrew was all the injured or abandoned baby squirrels and birds that we found in amoungst all the limbs and debris. We took the ones we found that were still alive to the Vet School at LSU. :(

I was near th coast of SC in college when Hugo came through in '89. Many people several hundred miles inland didn't have power for weeks. It was the scariest night of my life.

Oh another thing about Andrew.... It delayed my starting college by a week!

::yes:: Can't live here without knowing what it's like to go through Hurricane season.... The ones I remember the most are Fran, Floyd, and Hugo...and I'm sure there were several that blew through but didn't leave much of an impact.

Hurricane Dora; 1964. We have had some close calls over the years. Looks like Charley may give us some grief.

Nope. Can't say that that disappoints me any...

Hurricaine Gloria (sometime in the 80's?). We lived on the bay in NJ and were evacuated. I was in 8th grade and was evacuated to my school. It was very scary for me. I remember thinking that we would go home and the house would be gone. It was fine though.
