Have you ever been offended by advertising?

1) I agree that the guy is always supposed to be stupid and incompetent.

2) There's a 'family' movie coming on ABC 'family' that has the word 'sex' in the commercial 4 times. Really, they're discussing the most interesting place he's 'done it' in the commercial and it's supposed to be a 'family' movie?

3. We listen to the Dave Ramsey podcast and their used to be a commercial for e-meals that really bothered me. (They've changed the ad since then though.) It talked about meal planning and coupons and then a woman's voice said 'e-meals does all that time consuming brain-work for you!' Because, you know, we women can't handle any of that there time consuming brain work.

The pro HFCS commercials make me want to throw things at the TV. So condescending. And so WRONG. What happens in the lab between types of sugars has nothing to do with actual humans.

If I felt like torturing my child, I would give him some and videotape his reaction, then send it to them. Better yet, I would have them here and give him some, then leave them alone. But I don't want to torture DS, and he would refuse it anyway; he was 3 when I finally figured it out, he's almost 6 now, and he still remembers how out of control, scary, and violent he would get when he would have HFCS (or corn syrup or even corn syrup solids like are found in Dole Whips).

In the lab, sugar is (might be) sugar, but in humans it's vastly different. DH has a reaction as well (the opposite of DS's, DH passes out), and we can monitor it on his blood sugar monitor...cane sugar does one thing...HFCS does far far more.

I hate the stinking commercials. PLUS they always are eating something with red dye in it, which causes a similar reaction in many many people! As we "purified" DS's diet, we saw the food dye reactions even as we culled the corn syrup based things out, and therefore we don't do dyes, especially the red ones, either. Just nasty stuff.

Hate those ads.

There is solid research supporting BOTH sides of the argument. Personally the jury is still our for me. As a biochemist I just cannot buy that a simple sugar is to blame for that kind of psychological impact, with the degree of violence that some are claiming, but there is no denying that excessive amounts of fructose can have a negative impact on blood sugar regulation in some individuals, form corn suyrp or from other sources. I need to see more research, and controlled studies where other variables are eliminated before I make a decision. NEITHER side should be slinging porpoganda about a health issue like this. It is tacky to try to use porpganda to sell a person on either side of this debate. It is too important to people's health.

We have one on the radio for a local attorney. She defends those who have DUI's. She says something to the effect that most people that are driving under the influence are pulled over for other things like broken taillights, so it can happen to anyone. UUmmm, NO it can happen to those ******** that drink and drive  And that if you get caught you can get your license and your liberty taken away, so put her number in your cell so that when you do get pulled over you can call her. Yes, because they somehow deserve to keep their license after that  It drives me crazy, I wonder what kind of commercial she would have of she lost one of her loved ones to someone who was drunk behind the wheel.
This one definitely offends me.

That one for 'male enhancement' where all the girls are lining up to sit on Santa's lap :scared: That is so wrong on so many levels

There was a Nike commercial several years ago that I hated. It involved a female runner trying to get away from a murderer (a Jason type character) and was really in poor taste. A few days later I read in the paper it had been pulled because people were upset by it.

I have a list of them LOL----

the KY warming gel commercials

The Meet Bob comercials where the woman just LOVE him now because of natural male enhancement!

Love your period "always" -- yea right!

And at the very top of my list are commercials for viagra and cealis- why why why are we subjected to those? My daughter asked questions about that WAY before I was ready to answer them about why you need to go to the hospital if something happens for 4 hours and what does that something mean!!

Yep, that was my #1 also

My current pet peeve commercial is an AT&T cell ad where mom, dad and toddler son are at a restaurant. Mom gets up to use the restroom and kid starts throwing a temper-tantrum. Dad acts like he can't control the kid. Spokesguy for the ad loads up a video on his phone, hands it to dad and the kid quiets until mom arrives.

First, it implies that dads have no control of their children. Second, why are we reinforcing that a bratty kid needs mindless cartoon stimulation every second of the day. Hate this commercial. Not a fan of the bratty, cheeky, sassy kids trying to sell stuff either.

Carl's/Hardee's commercials are nasty. I'm obviously not in their demographics. The food is repulsive the way it is presented.

Wow! That almost ENCOURAGES drunk driving by saying that 'most' people don't really have serious accidents when driving drunk. Very offensive.

The commercial I hate is the Staples one with the guy yelling "Wow, that's a low price". It's just stupid and makes me change the channel every time.

I guess it's not really "offensive" but just really annoying.

Some of the things that make me upset are kind of contradictory. For example, I get upset when I see people get upset over things that were supposed to be done as humorous and everyone gets there knickers in a knot over it. At the same time, and in relation to the quote above, how come no one is registering major amounts of indignation when so many commercial, TV shows and the like, make men look like totally incompetent fools that have to be constantly kept on the track by obviously superior women.

I find that to be, not so much offensive, as demoralizing and indicative of the attitudes of many. There are many stupid men out there, no argument, but they don't have a monopoly in the inactive brain cell department. However, in so many things men are depicted as weak, clueless and downright unable to tie their own shoes without a woman to help. In so many sitcoms, the kids are shown to be way wiser then the fathers and they usually are in the same camp as the mother. Dad's an idiot...Mom is the only one that knows anything.

Our humor has gotten to the point that the only thing that we find amusing anymore is when someone else is made to look like a fool. Pretty sad really!

You know, I actually mentioned this to DH yesterday. An old episode of Everybody Loves Raymond was on. I said I had stopped watching it after awhile because I couldn't stand the way she lectured him, treated him like an idiot and was always hitting, pushing and shoving him. I know comedy is exaggerated but this really got to me.

On the flip side how come 9 out of 10 times the wife in these shows is super hot (after 2-5 kids!) and hubby is chubby/dorky? Just once I'd like to see a normal sized/pooh sized wife and super hot hubby. It does happen and it's so insulting that tv pushes the "men can look however but woman must be a size zero and over the top gorgeous" mentality.

Sorry, way OT just got sparked there.

The Campbells commercials where the mom or dads we promoting soup as low calorie to tweens/teens had me furious.

I think its interesting how something that offends one person isn't a blip on the radar to another, I wouldn't have ever picked up on the hardworking FAMILIES. I would have probably heard it as more of hardworking people, but now that you say it that way, the phrase will probably annoy me too. ;)

Haha... I think if the commercial itself wasn't so annoying I wouldn't even pick up on it. But now every time it comes on I have to change the station. (It's a radio ad).

I don't remember what was being advertised, but there was a commercial where at least one woman (maybe another) was making seductive facial expressions and noises towards a male baby. Seems "amusing"...but if that was a man doing that to a girl, there would have been a huge uproar.

This reminds me of another commercial... and again, 'offended' is probably the wrong word but it's just so tasteless. A mom and her son's friend are in their new dorm that the son and friend are going to share (I think) and they each put either a breath mint or a piece of gum in their mouth and they start acting like they're reeeeeally enjoying it if you get my drift and then the dad the son come back into the room. So creepy.

And I totally agree about TV shows and commercials that make men look like idiots while the woman is always the smart one. The first time I remember seeing this trend was on Home Improvement and it hasn't let up. Drives me nuts.

Along the same lines, the 'official sponsor of mom' or 'proud sponsor of mom' commercials that aired during the Olympics made my head hurt. What about the dads? Obviously everyone has a different family situation but my mom was able to be a great mom because my dad was a great dad (and vice versa).

I'm not usually one to get offended, but there are two commercials that do manage to irk me.

#1- I don't remember if it was a Kodak commercial or something else, but the dad was taking pictures of the little boy and then sending them to grandma and grandpa in Florida- yes, because all grandparents and old people live in Florida. I just get a little annoyed when Florida is stereotyped.

#2- Pajamagrams :headache: I hate these commercials. Do they really think that men are stupid enough to think that we women are stupid enough to think he "spent days planning it." Come on!

Thing is, you have to remember the whole "dorkey yet hilarious" husband and the "hot but serious" wife didn't always exist, I mean look at Lucy and Ricky! She was beautiful but in the end Lucy was the one who did the best bits. Ricky was funny too but it was on another level and he played a great straightman to her jokes.

One of the pg test commercials irritates me. It says 1 in 4 women misread a pg test or something along those lines. I don't like the insinuation that it's the womens fault the test is misread. if that many people misread the thing then there needs to be a better design for a clearer answer.

What about the pregnancy test where they pour liquid (couldn't be real pee) on the test. "It's the best test you will ever pee on"

Amen to that. This is exactly how I feel. There was actually a thread about this commercial during the Olympics and this is pretty much what I had to say. As I type this, my DH is at a volleyball tournament with DD while I sit here Dis'ing . And he is the one who saves vacation time to go to her softball games, but it's all about the Moms. Really??? Don't get me wrong. I do my share, but DH does more on this end than I do.

I am annoyed by every single prescription drug commercial, magazine ad, etc.

Maybe I'm the ignorant one, but shouldn't the doctor prescribe what's best for the patient, not the patient requesting a prescription for what he/she saw advertised? :confused3

Sure there are always exceptions. Dan and Roseanne always seemed to be on an even playing field on Roseanne but then David and Mark were brought in to be idiots to the girls. Mad About You was an exception and to this day remains one of my favorite shows of all time.

Ditto! Although not an annoying part of the commercials, but I always find it amusing when they say to tell your doctor if you've had a heart attack, liver disease, etc. Shouldn't my doctor already know this

Being a male, over 60 and no longer concerned about pg's, I will admit that I only half listen to those commercials, but isn't that what the commercial is about...having an easier way to get the answer?
