Have Portofino for Universal; where for Disney?

We are going for four nights to see Disney with sons 12 and 8. We'll start for at least 2 nights at the Portofino (DH there on business) and will visit Universal on Friday afternoon and Saturday all day. Sunday DH needs to head home, but I'm staying with kids for two more nights to hit Disney. Am considering switching hotels, and wanted monorail but prices are out of this world. Should I stay put, or other suggestions for good values near Disney World? Easy transport is important to me. Thanks!!

Well, I think that if convenience is important to you, then you should definately stay at a Disney resort. :thumbsup2 Now, it also depends on what park you want to base your trip on: as you wanted a monorail resort, I'm assuming Epcot or Magic Kingdom? Wilderness Lodge is a Magic Kingdom resort and has lower prices than most other deluxes. Also, it offers a boat ride from the hotel to Magic Kingdom. Plus buses to the other 3 theme parks. Caribbean Beach is also a great alternative: it's an Epcot resort, but is as close to dead center as your going to get! It's all bus-transportation, but as it is in the center, the buses should not take you long. ;)
I hope that this helped!

Thank you May Queen! I'm going to check out your suggestions. I stayed at the Polynesian 25 years ago as a teen, but was set back by the price. So the monorail may not be an option. Thanks again for your feedback!

It's just easier to stay on property if you are doing Disney. The monorail resorts are ideal but, as you stated, pricey! From the sound of it, that's not the way you would like to go. Since you are staying at Portofino, stepping down to a value resort would probably not be a great change of plans as while the values are cute, they are a good value for your money and therefore, no frills really. Having said all of that, the moderate resorts are not bad in price and have more of a deluxe feel for the price. I would highly recommend in this order: POFQ, POR, CSR, and then CBR.

At the bottom I'll include a link to a website where you can look at the photos of all of these resorts and better pick something that will suit your families tastes and preferences.

POFQ (Port Orleans French Quarter) is our families favorite resort. Our kids love the Serpent Slide and I love the quaint, relaxed, New Orleans feel with the wroght iron railings and street lights, cobblestone paths, and gardens. The rooms are also tastefully decorated in a traditional manor. The property is also very compact so you don't have to walk a mile to get to the food court, pool, gift shop or buses. There is also a boat that will take you to Downtown Disney which is very convenient. Staying onsight means that you can utilize all Disney transportation, including buses and boats, monorails, etc. and in this case POFQ offers the buses to all theme parks and DD as well as the boat, as mentioned. Staying at either POFQ or POR means shared ammenities as they are considered "sister" resorts so you are free to enjoy anything the POR offers as well and vice versa.

POR is also a beautiful resort and features it's own great pool and slide ('Ole Man Island) in addition to a can pole fishing hole and a sitdown restaurant (although I think that is being refurbed and closed for a bit). POR has two sections, the mansions and Alligator Bayou. The mansions are just that, large buildings with columns, beautiful courtyards, verandahs and many rooms overlook the beautiful winding river (preferred fee), while Alligator Bayou is more rustic.

CSR is also a beautiful resort as well and features an amazing pool area called The Dig Site, based on a Mayan Ruin Temple and is very neat to say the least. CSR features three sections, Casitas, Cabanas and Ranchos, and each are themed and decorated to their own style. We have only stayed in the Casitas and thought it was very pretty. This resort is very large and the buildings are set around a large lake so you can wind up with a hike to get to the ammenities or main building and buses. I am told transportation runs around the complex to help out with the walking but I didn't personally need this or utilize it.

CBR is also another one of our favorite resorts. It truly is like going to the caribbean. I love the tropical feel, beautiful grounds and the lake and beach setting of this resort. Again, the only drawback is that the resort is spread out and you can have quite a hike. The main pool is wonderful, you can feed the ducks on one of many "beaches" behind the main pool bar and even catch some fireworks at night as they are somewhat visible from Epcot. We also loved the open air market feeling of the food court, loving eating lake/poolside and thought the gift shop was great as well.

So, I would ask yourself if you want to visit the tropics or perhaps siesta in Mexico or maybe you want to be Scarlet and live and in a "mansion" or just relax in the bayou back country or claim your New Orleans territory. It's a tough decision but that is how and what I would base my choice of resorts on.

You really can't go wrong no matter.

Good luck with your decision!

Is there anything in particular you want to have in a hotel? Disney hotels are great, but they each have something special. Do you want a great pool? Larger rooms? When are you going? Would love to help, just wanted more details to help.
Whatever you choose, have a great trip! :wave2:

First off, you are one nice group of helpful, knowledgeable people!! Thank you so much. You've also got a lot of lingo, lol, so I have to read slowly. :) I'm going to check out your recommendations.

The first two nights at Portofino were going to be our splurge...we get a preferred rate because of a convention DH is attending prior to our arrival. I was thinking of switching to something cheaper than $250/night...but not sure if POFQ or some of the other moderates would be less than that. I'm thinking we'll be mostly AT the park on Sunday and Monday, then on Tuesday we'll hang at the pool until we have to go to the airport for a 4pm flight.

So while we don't need too much in the hotel, getting to the park the hour early both days would be good, and being able to break in the day and leave the park and come back may or may not work. I was thinking Disney one day and Epcot the next--do people go early and break and then to back for the evening...especially if we only have a day or two there? Love the idea of the French Quarter theme...love New Orleans.

byoung...not following what you mean about the dvc and vwl?

Thanks again. You guys are PROS!!

By Disney you mean Magic Kingdom right? :) Well, Port Orleans (Riverside and French Quarter) are very much east of the Magic Kingdom area. So, let's say Walt Disney World is a big diamond: Magic Kingdom is the northern point, then to the left is Animal Kingdom. Then, in the middle is Epcot and to the south is MGM-Studios. If you are looking for the Northern-Middle point, I still would suggest Caribbean Beach. Port Orleans French Quarter is the western-most point of the diamond, with Downtown Disney. However, if you would like to try Coronado Springs (a Mexico-American Southwest type resort), it is in the Animal Kingdom area....not too far away from either park. But not exactly close either. I'm biased, what can I say!
Moderates cost usually from $120-$170. Values cost from $70-$110. Caribbean Beach has one pool per section (Aruba, Jamaica, Martinique, Barbados, etc. all have their own pool) plus a main pool. And, each section has its' own bus stop so you don't have to worry about walking a lot. :thumbsup2
