Have point values decreased?

Hi there - I'm sure there's a thread for this but haven't had a chance to look through all of them - but have any of you long time owners noticed a change in what your points will buy you year over year? I think that was one of the perks that they told me about - that what your points will buy you will never increase (and therefore, you are "locking in" your ability to get the same vacation each year...)

I have a friend interested in purchasing DVC but is concerned that Disney will increase point costs (not to purchase, but what your points will get you) over time, and therefore you're in the same situation paying out of pocket - that your costs go up each year.

I have only owned since 2001 and haven't noticed an increase, but thought I'd ask any long time owners if they've noticed a change.

Thanks in advance!!

Nope! Not if you use the points for stays at one of the DVC resorts. We've been members since 1999 and the only changes in the points requirement charts are to accomodate the changing dates for Easter, Thanksgiving & Christmas. And it's just the dates that change for those periods, not the number of points required.

If your friend is considering using points for any of the non-DVC resort options, then the answer is YES! The points needed for those do seem to increase every year - sometimes a lot. DVC only makes sense if you will use the points mostly for stays at a DVC resort.

Best wishes -

They cannot increase the total # of points in a resort. They can make slight changes, such as increase an SSR adventure season studio to 12 points instead of 11 but then they have to decrease the points somewhere else (such as decrease a 1 BR by 1 point.)

There have been no changes in point requirements at DVC resorts since 1996. At that time some OKW nights were increased a few points and other nights decreased by a few points.

That point increase was announced for OKW in the fall of 1994 when the point charts were released for 1996.

As noted the total number of points at a DVC resort cannot be changed, so any reallocation of points must maintain the same point structure. There is no such requirement for any of the non-DVC options and those can and do change yearly.

Dues however, do go up. So do, as has been mentioned, non DVC options - like cruising.

I have a slightly different take. Once established, the DVC resorts have not gone up. They could be readjusted if need be. However, IMO, the points have increased in another way. Compared to OKW, the newer resorts are all much more expensive. And it's likely that DVC would raise points somewhat for any new premium resort, if they indeed build another. Of course most of the non DVC options have increased dramatically. The exceptions are the II trades, many of which have gone up, and the Alaska cruise which went down then back up somewhat.

Thanks for the feedback! This is what I thought, but I didn't realize it was just the DVC props that remain "fixed" - I guess because we've always stayed at DVC locations I never noticed :D

It's definitely good to know that the other resorts are likely to increase so you can make an informed decision before purchasing.

Thanks everyone, this is just what I was looking for!
