Have I got Diabetes!!!!!

HELP-I have been to the opticians today and he is rather concerned about the drastic change in my prescription from short sighted to long sighted and wanted me to get a blood sugar test done by the nurse at my doctors surgery, but I can't get an appointment to see the nurse until the 10th March!!!!!! and they won't let me be fitted in as an extra - I might just be worrying about nothing but I have other mild symtoms that could be diabetes as well eg. excessive visits to the loo and swollen legs - I drink alot anyway so can't tell if that has got worse - do you think that I am worrying about nothing-personally I think that the nurse could have seen me quickly to put my mind at rest-this is all I need after being laid up with shingles just before Christmas!

Oh what a terrible worry for you. I'm afraid I'd be on the phone first thing tomorrow morning sorting out an appointment with the nurse straight away. Explain you don't think you can wait all that time and you're worried sick.

That is so out of order to have to wait that long when you are worried If only we could know when we needed to see the doctor we could make an appointment a month in advacne

Here in the states you can purchase testing strips at the pharmacy that allows you to check for sugar at home. If your physician truly cannot see you sooner why don't you see if you can purchase some of these test strips and check your urine for sugar yourself? That way, if it is very high you can call your physician again and tell them the results of the home test. Perhaps they could work you in then.

Also do you have any friends or relatives who own their own glucometer? My husband is type two diabetic and checks his own blood sugar several times each day. If there wasn't the Atlantic between us I would bring it to you.

To be honest when I was in a similar situation I was told by the receptionist to make an appointment with a Dr. She did my blood test and sent it off. Just make sure you eat or drink nothing before you go. The quicker they catch it the better. I haven't got it but a lot of people in my family so it will come eventually.

And don't get me started on Dr appointments. At my surgery you are not allowed to make appointments, you have to phone the day you require and see if they will see you. Not too handy for people who work or have things to do in the day. Boots sell the test strips but you have to buy 150 for £9.99.

Hi there

sorry your not feeling too well.

why dont you hand a urine sample into the surgery and ask them ask the nurse to test it...she should then contact you if the results are abnormal.

I work as a community nurse and often assist at our practice ....the nurses there are often asked to test samples.
If your sample is negative it is unlikely that a blood sample would be needed and you should then see a gp about your other problems.

How awful to have to wait that long

£9.99 for the strips from Boots is expensive, but it seems a small price to pay for peace of mind. The test literally only takes a moment - or like Galaxy said - take a sample to the nurse to do (they do the same thing with the strip).

Atleast you'll know <i>something.</i>

I am sorry to read this - and cant believe how long you've had to wait for your appointment!

As Pennys says - £9.99 does seem a small price to pay for peace of mind, but again, try not to worry and do keep us upto date.........we are always here for support

Times like these you know the NHS is going down the you-know-where. Maybe the £9.99 strips are an option, so long as it doesn't cause you more worry - or just go to the surgery and kick up a fuss. Cows and sheep get better treatment!

Thanks you all for the help and kind thoughts, did a test strip given to me by a friend of a friend, and it did change colour but only slightly, will try again for an appoinment tomorrow.

I thought the point of a practice nurse is that you could see them quite quickly for this type of thing as the GP's are so busy.

The trick is to say "Do you think that is acceptable " I hate some of the receptionists at doctor, they have no medical background and should not even ask you what the problem is (confidentiality) but they frequently do. You will need to keep in mind they they do not understand illness or consequencies of illness. You will have to be firm and say that waiting is UNacceptable and you want to see someone immedialty!!!.
If diabetis is confirmed then ask to be referred to a diabetic nurse specialist(the wait for this may be a little longer ) but the information they will give you will be worth it.

Finally got to see the practise nurse today and she has now done a blood test and a urine dip which showed the presence of a small amount of glucose so blood test results will return asap, but she thinks that maybe I can control it with diet and she has given me some diet list of things not to eat - all my favourites but this might help me loose some weight - the nurse reckons that I am a stone overweight, so that won't be helping, hopefully I shall soon feel better and will let you know how I am getting along
