I'm sure I'm not the only mother of young children who has nightmares about this.

I'm sure you're not alone in this fear but I have never heard of it happening. the railings are high and there is a lot of plexiglas around.

I believe a teen did once jump overboard when the ship was in port but that was a voluntary (and stupid) act.

I had nightmares too. But the ship is very safe, the railings have plexiglas on the lower sections on Deck 10 and almost all of Deck 9 is enclosed in plexiglas. We did not have a veranda, but if you do, take appropriate precautions. Make sure the little one cannot open the door on his or her own. Make sure all furniture is pulled away from the railing.

Time for dreams of tropical drinks and warm sand between your toes.

If you do have a room with a verandah, the lock is at the top of the sliding door so little ones can't unlock it without your help. Don't worry about it - even on your own balcony, your child will be under your supervision and they can see out of the plexiglass in the railing so its not so enticing to climb.

On all the decks the railings are about 4 feet high and they have plexiglass on the inside, so there is no place for a child to get a hand hold or toe hold to climb up.

On the upper decks, 9 and 10, where the pools are, the railings reach up to over 6 or 7 feet, with the same plexiglass arrangement.

I once read a guidebook which described the the decks as "surrounded by plastic wrap" ...sounded perfect for my twins! I was far more relaxed that I expected (and the nightmares do eventually go away)

That is why I always recommend getting the plexi verandahs when you have little ones rather than those solid metal ones. I didn't know better my first cruise and we had a metal one and my daughter had to stand on the table to see out...the past one was plexi and much more relaxing for me..I didn't have to hold on to her as she looked over the top since she could sit in the chair and look out the plexiglass!

When my kids were small this was one of my biggest fears every time we stayed in a hotel! We always brought all of the patio furniture inside the room (condo) immediately. I have heard they will take it off for you if you wish on the boat. There is not much room for you to put it in the cabin. I still don't even like that my kids will stand on their tiptoes and look over the verandah.........

good luck,

This is a valid concern. Our first cruise we booked a verandah. I was a nervous wreck (at the time did not even know the disboard existed would have saved me countless nights of lost sleep due to nightmares) until we walked around on deck and saw the verhanda and there was plexi glass everywhere. I realized my child would have to be an acrobat to fall overboard. I would put your fears to rest and enjoy your cruise.

We were on the sailing that did indeed have the teen jump off Deck 4 into the St. Thomas Harbor while we were docked.

Needless to say the Captain was not pleased and he was put under "house arrest" which means he could not leave his cabin unless accompanied by his parents.

I could hardly figure out how to open the verandah door...and I am 30something. Don't think you have to worry to much kids getting out there unattended.

WHY would someone do that?! What was he thnking?!

I've always been paranoid about this as well, it almost makes me literally sick to think about.

The 2 cruises we took with kids, we had oceanview rooms. This time we have a Cat 4. I'll admit I'm a bit nervous about my climbers (3 and 1)

Does anyone know of a list of plexiglass vs metal verandahs? We're in 8586.

Karen

On the plexi-glass v. metal verandha issue, if you look at a ship's map, I believe the rule of thumb is that all cabins forward of Cat 7 cabins will be plexi-glass while cabins aft of Cat 7 will be medal.

Me too -- I was very worried about this on our first cruise when our youngest was 5, a climber and jumper since the day he was born! Would not have gotten a balcony except DW insisted on it. But of course everything turned out fine.

A warning though: be SURE you know how to lock the balcony door! I thought I did, and I was wrong! There were no instructions in our room for how to lock it. If you don't have instructions, ask your cabin attendant to provide instructions, either printed, by showing you how, or both. And each time you think you have locked the door, test it!

The captain showed a lot more restraint than I would have.

I'd have left the kid in the water and thrown down his suitcase from Deck 9.

"Here, smart-aleck, catch!!!"

You bet if I was that kid's parents he would not see the light of day for a long time.

He decided to do this on a dare.....peer pressure or whatever...if was stupid and dangerous.

What I want to know is: HOW did he get OUT of the water?
