Have Americans ever asked you about Canadian stereotypes?

Be proud of your knowledge of Japan. I scored 100

Sounds like the inside passage to me too.
Part of Alaska is south of Yukon (including the captial city, Juneau) with some of Alaska's islands scattered not too far north of Washington.
I have heard silly things said on both sides of the border. What has surprised me on more than one occasion, was to hear the Americans laughing at how gullible the Canadians are. I overheard this one group of college age kids continue on with these silly statements about polar bears etc.:crazy2: I listened to another group of people do this same thing some months later. These people knew how they are being portrayed and were having fun with it.whatever.... As long as everyone is having fun and noone is getting hurt. As long as I can get to Disney for my WDW fix then I dont' care what anyone is saying!!!:upsidedow*** BTW Another cold snap is going to be coming along at the end of the week so I better be ready to plug my dog sled in.;)

I have one to add (if this thread is still going). Last summer I was at the Ontario tourist building (I live in a boarder city Sarnia/Port Huron) picking up some travel info and in walks 4 Americans. They walk up to the person working there and ask about what to do if they see a bear. I laughed so hard.:rotfl2:

Also when we were in New York city in Aug 2000, we were waiting in line to take the boat over to the Statue of Liberty and we started talking to another couple. Told then we were from Canada and they asked how we were enjoying wearing shorts. I still remember their puzzled faces when we all started laughing.

It really is amazing how (for us) just driving over a bridge is a whole different world.

That's hilllarious! I sooooo agree! Just crossing the bridge, you can totally tell who are the locals just by the way they talk.

I've got lots of stories from working on Clifton Hill one summer between years at university. I used to love when I would get asked, "When do the Falls get turned off?" I would politely say..."Oh, you must mean the lights...we'd need a mighty big switch to turn those Falls off!"

We were in Universal (I know sacrilidge (sp?)) during the hockey strike and my sister was wearing an I Love Hockey Players shirt. The ride opperator at the Mummy asked if we were Canadian and then said she must not be loving the hockey players this year.

Everytime we are in the states my husband get all messed up with his drink orders. At home in Canada he loves Ginger Ale and Iced tea. In Orlando, they rarely have ginger ale (at o'hana's they mixed coke and sprite together to make some for him lol!) and iced tea....well if you've made that mistake then enough said!

I have so many stories about this subject that I will not even go there, but if you watch the Jay Leno show and his Jaywalking segments, some of the college students that he interviews do not even know who their vice president is or anything of American history, let alone know anything about Canada, so I dont feel slighted.

These stories are hilarious!

I worked in a call center environment for 10 years, and most of it was for American clients. I think I have heard every Canadian stereotype out there. I was also once yelled at for stealing jobs. Oh well, that is why I am now finished with call centers. :)

I noticed that there are a few Dis'ers from Sarnia, Ontario....we should have a Dis meet sometimes! I am semi-new from the city, originally from the Maritimes. I go to Lambton College (mature student). But ya....stereotypes.

Last month at WDW my family and I were at Earl of Sandwich and while my parents were in line I was at our table and this couple sitting next to me from South Florida asked if I was from Toronto because they saw my Maple Leafs hat. Anyway I said yes and then that persons wife asked me to say the world about, because she must have heard it on TV or in a movie the way some Canadians say it in a funny way. So I said it and she was shocked that I said it the correct way if you want to look at that and I said not all Canadians are like that. Honestly I was not angry or anything because I thought it was more funny and I did prove not all Canadian stereotypes are true. So has anyone been in situations like that?

You know what, we had a very similar situation. When we went down in August of 09. We had a person come up to us (they were from Ohio) and they asked us how we say the word 'Lexus'. I siad it and they saw no difference as far as I can tell.

Ive read another one of your posts saying how you have a Lexus vehicle. Maybe the same people we saw will ask you to roll down your window at a stoplight and ask you to say "Lexus"

That's something I never thought I would hear because as you said we say it no different then they do.

Well if they see the car and notice the Ontario license plate, let's see if they know it's a Canadian car.

One stereotype I haven't noticed in this discussion--that Canadians are all "cheap". People in Florida have mentioned this to DH and me a couple of times. In one case the inquirer was only familiar with retired "snowbirds" on a fixed income, and the exchange rate Canada$$-US$$ was dreadful (30%) at the time. The other case was a limo driver who wanted to impress on us that a 20% tip to limo drivers is considered "standard" in Orlando. (Hmmm?)
Both instances were a number of years ago. I would like to think that this part of the Canadian stereotype has changed, particularly in light of the new, more restrained, economy and personal spending on both sides of the border.

1)- We were celebrating our Thanksgiving at LTT when a very nice woman asked why the difference in dates but then proceeded to ask me when our Christmas was:rolleyes1

2)- My 3 kids all had Canadian fleece jackets on and a woman in Epcot came running up behind us to ask where we got them. I told her Parry Sound, Ont. Canada and she said perfect my husband is in Canada right now- which store. So I asked her where is your husband now and she replied B.C. So I told her he just needs to get in his car and drive east for 2 days.

On another note I must be the typical stereotype because I work with a guy from Peru and he laughs every time I say "eh" and he laughs alot.:dance3:

have you ever been to France? :)
As a french speaking canadians, we all have the same questions about Canada, but in France! Plus they keep calling us "coussins"... The argue with me over the pronounciation of McGill College (they kept calling it "Mac" Gill) ask me if I ever saw anybear or moose (we see them a lot on the corner of Ste-Catherine Streets and McGill College!) even dare to ask me if we had electricity, internet and if I knew a girl name Stephanie that was from Quebec city!!!
I'm sure we do the same when we're down there!!!

I met a guy who asked me if I shut my water IN my house off in the winter so my pipes don't freeze!
