Have a wdw coming up and wondering if mynprime is too wide

My 50mm is 1.8. The only time I used a flash was inadvertently.

But did you take people pictures in the daylight. How did you combat that harsh light without a speedlite or indoor character meets can be very poorly lite.

I took only a few photos of people. Most were in the morning or evening outdoors using natural light. This was a college graduation trip for DD. We only did one character meet, at Be Our Guest. For BOG, I just used the 50mm, the on camera flash, but reduced the exposure by 1/3 of a stop.

I meant pics like this
45mm
1/60
Flash
Iso 800

Would I really need wider than 35mm? Or 24 on my zoom?

24 mm is probably wide enough for the way i wanted to crop (more background scenery to provide more of the environmental setting) - if you are happy with the crop shown then you're set. 24-70 was wide enough for me but i wanted the 24 mm f/1.4 prime for indoor shots without flash. I really had to stretch to find a use for the 16-35 i brought along.

Yeah I like the environment but I tend to want the dominant focus point in my photo's of the kids since they are growing up so fast. I feel like i can get more creative as they get older. At this point everyone in focus and as much distracting background detail cropped out is what I am going for these days. I still wonder about something over 35mm with a wide aperture like the 50 or 85mm but If I bring too much then I will hate lugging all that gear in that heat.

On camera flash? What camera was it?

I ask because i have a canon 5d and there is no onboard flash. How do you like the d800? How was the high iso?

I was very pleased with the D800. I did several dark rides and was very happy with the low light functionality. I do notice a marked increase in "grain" at the very high ISO but that is the tradeoff for an image that doesn't blur.

I was very happy with the "wenches" photos in Pirates. I only adjusted the saturation; I left the contrast alone.

The hitch-hiking ghosts required a little contrast adjustment. You can also see some of the "grain" from the very high ISO.
