I am going to wdw in 2 weeks.

I am bringing my 24-70 2.8 on a canon 5d 3 full frame

Also the sigma 35mm but a lot of threads talk about a 35mm but most use it on a crop camera. Should i go with the 50mm or grab something like the 85mm/135mm where the 24-70 stops. I am looking for versatility of just family shots with my soon to be 6yr old twins. I hear it will be crowded so just looking for some advice. For example a character greeting or night parade where the larger aperture will help.

I have a full frame. The only time I really used my 85mm was for animal photos in AK and for taking photos of Wishes from the Poly.

I found myself wanting a wider angle lens (than my 24mm) only once, for Illuminations because I set up in Showcase Plaza. Even then, there were only a few times that the fireworks were too high for my 24mm

If you are doing family photos, I can't imagine the zoom won't serve you pretty well for most of what you want.

For the Main Street Electrical Parade (in May 2013) I used my 50mm, at ISO 800, f.3.5, 1/30:

(This was slightly cropped.)

We were seated a little back from the parade, in rocking chairs on a porch just behind Sleepy Hollow in Liberty Square (where Hall of Presidents lets out). If you are closer to the parade, you may want to use a wider angle lens.

Did you have reach beyond 70mm and find a need for it?

I carried my 85mm in a vest pocket for the first several days and almost never needed it until we got to AK and AKL. The 85mm was practically perfect for the walking trails. Now, generally, I prefer the 85mm for family photos for the depth of field but I didn't use it that much in WDW.

I can't imagine your zoom at 70mm will not serve you well for family photos. Even in a vest, the 85mm got very heavy. May was hot enough (upper 80's to low 90's most afternoons). You'll be there in the worst of the summer heat. I would avoid needlessly carrying a heavy lens.

Even so, I would still take the 85mm to AK if you go. You might even want the 135mm there. My 135 mm has aperture issues so I didn't bother with it this trip but even so, I would have used it only rarely, for the komodo dragon and some of the plains animals.

Good point about the 135mm is yours just a problem or is that a known issue?

its a problem with my lens. my aperture blades are not shutting.

Sorry to ask so manyquestions but which 50 did you use? Also i am bringing the 70-300L for reach. I was thinking the 85/135 for shows to isolate the kids but maybe that would be too much gear. What flash did you bring?

At Disneyland with my 5D3 I used my 24 F/1.4L II prime quite a bit on dark rides to get interior shots without flash; otherwise most of my shots were with my 24-70 F/2.8L II. Indoors could have even used wider to get the whole scene in (on rides, Alladin theater, etc.) but outdoors was ok with 24 mm.

Took shots with the 16-35 F/2.8L II only when I started the day off with it mounted or went somewhere were I thought the effect was needed (some off site bus tours to Santa Monica pier, etc.). Using ExposurePlot on my weeklong vacation shots showed about 100 of 1370 photos were taken below 24 mm focal length and about 380 of 1370 were taken larger than F/2.8 aperture.

I was hoping my 35mm would cover that. So if I am covered with the 24-70 and 35 prime then I really do not need anything it sounds like. Maybe i will grab a 50mm 1.4 and bring that just in case and switch lenses daily.

More than half of my shots (about 800 of 1370) were taken at 24 mm (from 24 F/1.4 and 24-70 F/2.8 L IIs).

So at WDL I wanted to shoot as wide as the lens would let me in most cases. Plus going wide allowed me to get all of the scene in prior to cropping to what I wanted.

Can you post a shot of a character greeting or something at 24mm? Or did you crop into like 35 or 50 after you took it.

All at 24 mm uncropped

Jessie California Adventure Parade (sitting on curb edge)

Ariel's Grotto (could have used wider as Ariel not in shot by prince - needed F/1.4 for low light without flash)

Meeting Minnie (27 mm)

Wow never thought i would need that wide makes me think i should bring a 16-35 uwa but the reason I have not was for people shots of my kids. The 24mm is an option.

While optical zoom is always better, if I had to choose I'd rather have too wide a prime than not wide enough. Especially at WDW. If you're using the 35mm and it's too wide the 5D3 has enough resolution and sufficient image quality that you can crop in a bit without sacrificing a lot.

The problem is that due to the crowds and layout you might not be able to back up enough to frame the shot the way you want with a longer lens.

Shooting wide you can crop to what you want plus have some pixels to lose during rotation if the shot isn't perfectly horizontal and vertical.

So do you think the combo of my 24-70 and 35mm would be limiting? Should I look at the 16-35 or 24mm 1.4? Or would I be set?

[img]http://farm9.staticflickr.com/...eally need wider than 35mm? Or 24 on my zoom?

My 50mm is 1.8. The only time I used a flash was inadvertently.
