What is caster sugar is that what we call confectioner's sugar in the US?

Also what is shortcrust? Is it just pie crust?

I want to make a couple of the recipes and even though I bought the book here in US it has a few cooking references that I do not understand.

Caster sugar is somewhere between granulated and icing sugars - do you have those?

Shortcrust pastry is made with half fat to flour and, traditionally, equal quantities of butter and lard are used, although some use margarine or shortening. My Mum always made hers entirely with lard.
