I do have the Dining Plan & I Love the DDP !!!!
We think it is a terrific deal & allows us eat at lots of wonderful restaurants around WDW!!
BUT, I read over & over again on how much food you get and how much food is wasted at the end of a big meal....Lots of DIS'ers have posted they feel bad wasting so much food......
I was Just Curious if WDW just throws all food away in the garbage or if any of it can be packaged up for Food Shelters, Salvation Army Shelters for less fortunate folks.....

Not Complaining About Anything, Was Just Wondering......

:smickey: :butterfly :flower1:

In accordance with guidelines from the US Department of Agriculture, restaurants cannot donate any food "that may have been handled by anyone except kitchen staff". So once something is touched by a server, it cannot be donated.

I worked in a food court at Disney on the college program and they told us that left over food was donated to feed animals.

WOW !!
I wonder how many pounds of food are thrown out everyday....when you consider all the buffets and all too.....
Whewwwwwww

It always makes me giggle when I read how much food is on the dining plan. People don't *have* to order an appetizer, entree & dessert at table service, you're allowed to, but no one is making you and if you're worried about wasting it, don't get it. Same with counter service, you don't have to order dessert, but you can. I know people feel entitled and want to get 'what they paid for' but really you're making out like a bandit anyways and if you don't get the app and dessert you're still saving $ at best and breaking even at worst. We use the plan and just order what we want and love having it prepaid.

*disclaimer- all forms of the term 'you' are meant in the general collective and not aimed at any particular poster.

About the extra food - someone posted that Disney donated the food to animals. A few moons ago I worked in the kitchen of a residential summer camp for three years and we did the same thing. There were two slop cans in the back near the dishwashers that all food products went into. The farmer came every other day and picked it up for his pigs. (insert lots of teenage jokes about canibalistic pigs when we served bacon, sausage or hot dogs)

Folks should consider that food is never wasted, in this country. We rely on the agricultural segment of our society to feed us. They're struggling horribly. The less food consumed, the more our farms die.

We are not "running out of food." If we waste less food, it does not result in more food for anyone else. If we waste less food, it does not mean that our food will "last longer". Food is a renewable resource, and its consumption, at its current level, just barely keeps a very important part of our economy from collapsing.

Thank you, Bicker. I live in CT, and our proud farming community continues to try to compete in a world that often forgets where their food comes from.

Hubby and I are both getting the dinning plan. On some of the table service meals, can we share an entree, and an appetizer rather than using two credits. I don't think I can eat as much as they are offering.

You sure can. Just tell your server that you'll only be using 1 credit and they will bring an extra plate for you. You'll have to pay for your own drink of course.

That's a very good point that I've never thought of, bicker. :thumbsup2

If we just didn't want something we just didn't order it. You do not have to eat everything you are officially entitled to in order to make the DDP a good deal.

Do you think one could say that consuming more food than your body needs is wasteful? I mean, a body needs a certain amount of calories to function, and consuming above that results in the excess calories being stored as fat.

I'm not trying to start any kind of argument with this idea. I'm genuinely curious as to what people would say about this viewpoint.

Congrats on your weight loss, by the way!!! Great job!

Thats what we did. Our first night was at Kona and it was our very first meal on the dining plan. OMG, there was so much food. I ended up taking my part of my filet and shrimp back to the room and had it for breakfast that next morning. The steak was fantastic the next day (as well as the night before).

Yeah, better safe than sorry, but it does seem to be such a waste.

:confused3

Good Points !!
I DO think it is alot of wasted food, and YES I agree that you Don't Have to Order Everything (App/Entree & Dessert)....
I do like you can get a doggy bag to-go.....
WOW Wheeeeee Farm Pigs Around There Must Eat Fabulously.....
AND, YES It is very important to keep the farming industry going....

BUT, I do want to taste my appetizer, entree & a few bites of my dessert, just need smaller portions.....I like to sample things, but in the USA we serve such big portions of food....

I really like reading all your thoughts on this ! popcorn:: ::yes:: :dogdance:
