Hate thrill rides, should I avoid Star Tours and Dinosaur?

I'm a huge ride chicken. I tried Goofy's Barnstormer once with the kids, and hated it--never again! Even Test Track freaked me out a little bit--I kept thinking suddenly there would be a big drop or it would turn into coaster ride, even though I knew that wasn't the case. I haven't even attempted BTMR or Splash, or anything else remotely resembling a thrill ride. Yet, rides like the Tea Cups I could do all day--spinning doesn't bother me.

So..on our upcoming trip I am considering riding Dinosaur and Star Tours. I'm thinking since they're motion simulators rather than actual coasters I might do okay:confused3? The only motion simulator rides I've ever been on were at the county fair, which I'm sure are a far cry from Disney's version.

Are these rides like an actual thrill ride or roller coaster, or is it more like watching a movie and having your seat move around a bit? Would you advise skipping these rides for someone who hated Goofy's, and thought Test Track was quite wild?

Thanks!

Dinosaur is a thrill ride. It's not a simulator. If barnstormer freaked you out, forget it for Dino.

Star Wars is just a simulator (which makes me sick). That that should be fine for you.

you must be a lot of fun to take to a theme park :confused3

you wont like dinosaur..it is jerky and loud and some people say very scary..tho it is not a coaster

you may enjoy star tours..its rather tame i think

I disagree about Dinosaur. While not a simulator, it is hardly a "thrill ride"- more like a dark ride that features a bumpy ride. You never go very fast or experience any drops. The thrills in Dinosaur are more of the scary, things jump out at you from the dark variety.

Star Tours- the old version would be fine. Don't know what the new version will be like, but if it isn't any more wild than the last version, you should be fine.

have you tried watching u-tube (you-tube - not sure which) videos of the rides??
dino - has dinos that jump out at you & scream but otherwise it is a jeep ride

I really love splash mt but then I loved rrc - but the Be'er rabbit & friends are so cute - I really dont think it is all that bad (that one drop might be for you but rest is relaxing)

Yeah, a theme park is not my ideal vacation. I much prefer visiting National Parks; my choice for our vacation this year would've been another trip to Yellowstone/Grand Tetons. But with kids and a dh that love thrill rides/theme parks, sometimes we have to compromise.;). At least at Disney there are several tame rides I can do---at our local amusement park, I only rode two rides the entire day!

I think I'll skip Dinosaur--not a fan of jerky. Dh can take the kids by himself on that one. Sounds like Star Tours might be okay though.

I called it a 'thrill' ride really for the OP - because she thought barnstormer was a thrill ride (to her). I have yet to keep my eye open the entire time on Dino, and I'm not scared, but knowing things will be popping out... and sometimes you feel like you "have" to hold on, w/ how bouncy and jerky it is.

I would definitely suggest skipping Dinosaur - it is an actual ride and a motion stimulator in one, and throws you around a lot. It also has a few dips which would probably bother your stomach.

Star Tours is pretty mild. I actually tend to get bored riding it because for me it's too obvious that your seat is just moving while you're watching a screen.

I would definitely skip Dinosaur if I were you! I love it, but it is quite a ride. I agree with the previous poster that mentioned looking it up on YouTube too see what you think.

Geez... that comment comes across as inappropriate, uncalled for, unfair, and generally... not nice! :sad2:

Just because a person does not like "thrill rides" doesn't mean they (personally or the people they are with) can not have fun at a theme park!

My husband & I don't like "thrill rides", yet we both had been dying to go to Disney since kids! Finally accomplished said trip in September - 10 days.

We did not ride (by choice):
Astro Orbiter
Space Mountain
Rock'n'Roller Coaster
Tower of Terror
Expedition Everest
Primeval Whirl
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (debating this Sept)
Mission Space (may try green side this Sept)

We did not get to ride (due to kids) but will this Sept:
Test Track
Dinosaur
Soarin'
Splash Mountain
Ellen's Energy Adventure

Wow... I totally did not realize that my husband & I, or our kids, did not have fun on our trip... :confused3 :rotfl:

but you all agreed ..they were all rides none of you wanted to ride
big difference when one goes with someone who wants to ride with a person who doesnt want to ride.

For me, it would be boring to go with someone who was too afraid to ride anything. Now, if you had tried all those rides and then decided you didnt like them, I would support you 100% . To just not do some disney rides out of fear just doesnt appeal to me. We are all entitled to our opinions even if they arent politcally correct

I do think Dinosaur will be a bit much for you. I loved it but I like most roller coasters (though this is not like a roller coaster - it is bumpy and jerky!). There is so much else to see -- you will have plenty to do even if you miss many "rides."

Now Star Tours is a different type of experience. IMAX type films make me sick -- this reminds me of that and both DH and I were totally sick after riding it. Sweat popping out on a cold day ... and we were on our way to lunch - BLEH! Anyway -- if IMAX type things don't make you sick, I really think you will be ok on that.

Have fun -- ride what you want -- don't be bullied into doing something you don't want to. Just like I think it isn't right to bully children onto rides they aren't ready for!

:thumbsup2

Star Tours and Dinosaurs are rides that involve a lot of shaking and tossing you around...well not literally as you wear seatbelts when riding both attractions. If you're prone to intense motion sickness you might wanna stay away from both. If you're sensitive to flashing lights and constant shaking you may wanna avoid Dinosaur. Star Tours is quiet tame so you might be able to handle it but I have no idea what the new version is gonna be like as far as intensity goes.

I can understand your point above. And I could understand the original comment I have issues with IF the OP was insisting the rest of her party could NOT ride because *she* didn't like the ride. But that was not the case. And her husband will take the kids on the ride. So no one suffers or gets upset. They are happy riding and she's perfectly willing to wait.

During our past trip, our daughter refused to ride the Magic Carpets. So she waited while we rode with her brother. Confused me though cause she loved Dumbo. :confused3 She's 11 by the way.

Now hubby & I were "bad parents" (according to our 11 year at the time) and *made* her ride the Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Carribean, Snow White, Peter Pan, Gran Fiesta, Spaceship Earth, and Maelstrom. Now she's happy to tell everyone she rode them and not admit she chickened out (or that she was scared and we "forced" her to). :goodvibes

In return I later agreed to ride the Tea Cups and let her spin the wheel madly about. Then I had to sit on the low wall for about 5 minutes to recover. :scared1: But it made her happy and I didn't puke. :goodvibes

I kind of wanted to ride the Barnstormer. My 6 year old has ridden "kid" roller coasters before and was interested but changed his mind. (sigh) I would have gone on with him and hopefully built up my own courage for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. But oh well.

I'm hoping my husband will be willing to ride BTMR and Splash Mountain with me this Sept. If not, I'm trying to convince myself to ride by myself. But if I don't - oh well. Our kids won't be around to see me chicken out after making them try rides! :rotfl:

I didn't see when you are going, but it it is before May 20, you don't have to worry about Star Tours because it will still be closed.

It sounds like your main issue are heights and speed like roller coasters and TT. If that is the case then Dino is not a problem. IT's dark and bumpy/jerky (like the Safari ride but with big speedbumps you roll over fast) and there is a dino that jumps out at you and roars. I don't really like big coasters (height and that g-force feeling) or spinning and Dino is no problem. That being said I don't really like it and won't wait to ride it. Funnily enough though I LOVE the INdiana Jones ride at DL which is the same ride essentially with a much better theme ;) Star Tours is being updated right now. The old one was basically watching a movie while the seats moved a bit. Nothing scary at all. I'm not sure how much is being updated beyond the movie. We recently went to Universal STudios and I thought because I was ok with Star Tours I'd be fine with all the simulator rides but the ones there were much more extreme and not all enjoyable ;P I think when the new Star TOurs opens you can get a better idea if it's something you'll enjoy.

I a certified, card carrying, ride chicken. I can't do anything that spins too much, goes upside down, has big drops, and I have a hard time with simulators in general - I tend to get motion sickness. I hate roller coasters, even the little ones.

Having said all that, I love Dinosaur. Its one of my favorite rides. I can't ride Star Tours as it makes me sick.

I would say Star Tours OK
Dinosaur NO.

JMHO

D always makes my back and neck ache agter riding,,,,but I do because one of my DDs favorites.

>>>>>I did SM on my honeymoon 32 years ago and it darn near killed me. Will not do any of the Mountains, have never done Star Tours either. On the last trip I did do Test Trak-enjoyed it, not anywhere near as bad as I thought it would be,so then I did Dinosour(went on similar motion simulater rides in Vegas and NYC)Dinosaur was a complete waste of time, very hurky jerky, but the ride was such a short duration thet by the time you acclimated yourself the ride was over. It was a giant bust in my opinion. I would not waste valuable time on Dinosaur.
