My son will be almost 10 when we go to Disney next May. His ears get sunburn VERY easily. When I took him when he was 5, I bought him a fishing cap which we pacified him by pinning all his pins he traded to. But now he says he is TOO BIG to be wearing a hat like that. Any ideas?

sunscreen alone isn't enough for his ears.

Hmmm, DS is 8 (almost 9) and we are just back from a trip to Bonita Springs, FL where he wore a bucket-type hat all week, for just the same reason. (New super short haircut, and ears that will BURN up). I could try to post a picture of him in it, if you think it would help your DS to see another boy in the same dire straits ;)

I don't see a 10 year old boy wanting to wear a hat that covers his ears. He is too cool for that. I would use the SPF50 and put it on every hour.

If you have a picture, that would be great. I am not sure if it will fly with him or not :confused3

Thanks :goodvibes

"He is too cool for that" That cracks me up, same thing my husband said :rotfl2:

spf50 ? I will have to look for that strength. I have tried spf45, 5 more may make a difference. He is super pale.

I know how they think, our family mostly has boys. Most of my cousins are male and the next generation is mostly male. Many are past the 10 year old stage and everything is not cool then. The big joke is to try to cuddle or kiss them, they are so grossed out. :teeth: As you can see I can be an evil Aunt. :lmao:

Go to a local army navy place and get him a camo jungle hat.

I would be willing to buy him any hat he wants, (check out the hat shop at WDW), but if the sunscreen does not fully protect his ears, I would insist that he wear some type of hat. Skin Cancer is too scary to worry about being cool.

Check out JCrew or Gap, usually they have those fisherman type hats that look cool.

When we were in New Smyrna Beach Florida a few weeks ago I was sunburned despite the 50 spf I had on,. The shop keeper at one of the shops in town told me about a sunblock they sell at the surfing stores (there was one in town there). She said it is the highest strength you could get and it works great as it is geared towards surfers that are out in the water under the sun all day. I forgot the name of it, but you may be able to google surfing stores and see if you could order it. She told me her son is fair as can be and it was the only thing that kept him from sunburn. Its nice to know they make such strong stuff. Hope this helps. I believe it is called Burnout or something like that.

My DS is the same age and is VERY fair (his eyelashes are white!). He has some hats from Gap Kids that cover his ears that he wore to camp last summer, but he really doesn't care for hats.

DH watches outdoor shows a lot and one of the pro fishermen wears Blue Lizard sunscreen. I saw some at CVS Pharmacy and I may try it this summer at home so we can decide if we need it for WDW in August.

Last summer at the water park we applied Coppertone SPF 45 lotion, then touched up with the continuous spray SPF 30 - nobody got sunburned. :sunny:

I agree with Ducklite. I bought both myself (I'm more than a little sparse on top) and DS(8) Boonie hats - kinda fun, good coverage for head and ears, and you don't need to worry about wrecking them as they're crumpable (is that a word? ;) ).

They're available at almost any army or military surplus store.

What about a hat like Indiana Jones wears? It should cover his ears and may just be "cool" enough for a 10 year old.

I Googled Boonie hats and I think they look "cool". My DS8 might actually wear something like that because he likes camouflage. Plus I even saw one that was the blue camouflage. :smooth: I'll ask him after school if he thinks they are cool enough... :teeth:
