Has your SO ever invited people over for dinner without checking with you first?

:faint: I can't believe DH did this...he's usually so good about checking in with me first!

He's invited his dad & dad's 2nd wife over for dinner tonight and just told me! They're coming at 6:00, and it's 4:40 now. We were out of town this weekend, so I didn't clean the house on Saturday like I usually do, AND we have bags we haven't unpacked, AND we had a new dishwasher installed today, AND I'm a nanny to a 7 mo. old baby who comes to our house each day so I still have to take care of her and clean up all the baby stuff...

The funny thing is, it's not like we're really close to FIL and step-MIL. We get together every couple months or so for dinner or the "quarterly family birthday celebrations" where we celebrate all the birthdays in a 3 month period. I'm glad DH is reaching out to his dad, but I just wish he'd have asked me first, or at least given me a day to get ready! My kitchen table is PILED with all the stuff that has to be put away, and the bathroom is a pit. Oh dear. Wish I could wave a magic wand and have this all cleaned up and I could be looking lovely and gracious instead of filthy and frazzled! Where's a girl's fairy godmother when you need her?! pixiedust:

Anyone else ever have this happen to them? And why am I sitting here venting on the DIS when I should be cleaning?!! :rolleyes1

Ask him how he's going to find the time to clean the house and cook a meal before they get here! Honestly, he owes you big time for this one!

Obviously, not!!! Since, he's sitting here beside me. If he had, he'd be dead! :rotfl2: Good luck!!! Hope all goes well. pixiedust:

My husband has thrown some surprises like this on me.
Tell your DH to pick up some steaks, and fresh corn for him to grill, some dinner rolls, and a pie on his way home, and whip up some mashed potatoes, and a tossed salad.

Throw everything in a closet (with the exception of maybe the 7 month old) and follow mommytotwo's advice and tell DH he can make it up to you with a pair of diamond earrings or a Disney cruise. You'll take either. ;)

Thanks, everyone! Well, we survived and it was fine. The baby was a sweetie and entertained herself until her daddy came to pick her up (on time, even!). I managed to get everything off the table - I tossed it all into paper bags and threw them in the "avoidance closet" ;) . Thank heaven for clorox wipes and orange-oil furniture wipes! I wiped everything down with one or the other and the whole house smelled like I'd spent the day slaving away on cleaning. I grabbed a broom and did a quick sweep of all the "visible" areas of the floor and got rid of the worst of the cat hair on the furniture. I told DH he was in charge of dinner and I'd deal with the "atmosphere" end of things. He came through with grilled chicken-apple-gouda sausages, grilled asparagus, chips, salsa, brownies, and strawberries. FIL & S-MIL brought a salad. Fortunately, we'd just moved our patio furniture back outside, and I'd just gotten all of our plastic cook-out plates, trays, bowls, etc. out of storage, so that was taken care of.

Now my new dishwasher is running for the first time (hooray! I finally have a dishwasher that really washes dishes!), and FIL and S-MIL both kept commenting about how tidy and new our house looks! :rotfl: Oh, if they had only seen it 2 hours earlier...

I told DH that he owes me diamond earrings or a Disney cruise, and he said "how about I just owe you one?" I said he had no idea how much he owed me - maybe I should have taken before and after photos of the house!

He did appologize very nicely. Turns out he just learned that his dad was leaving this week for their summer home in Canada, so he wanted to get together with them before they were gone for 3 months. Tonight was the only night all of us had free, so he invited them over for dinner. Wish he would have said that we'd meet them somewhere and go out to eat instead, but oh well. I did tell him not to pull a stunt like this again or he'd be in SERIOUS hot water!

Thanks to all of you - it helps to vent sometimes!! :thumbsup2
