Has Renting Points Become More Prevalent?

This past trip in conversations among some of the other bus riders, I was surprised at how many people riding to and from BWV were renting points. One gentleman even thanked us for being an owner because "you make it possible for us to rent points."

We have never rented out our points, and for the first time we are renting at OKW in April.

Does anyone have an idea how many owners rent out their points?

I don’t know how many owners rent their points but I think it’s becoming more appealing for non owners to rent points or stay in dvc rooms because of the parking fees that are now being applied to all rooms excpet those from dvc. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong, this is just what I think.

You can add me to the count of owners who rent. I have enough points to go for 2 weeks every 3 years in each of my resorts. But should I not be using them, I rent them out. I have rented out twice.

In 3 years, I will be renting to stay at BCV to attend the F&W because I do not own there. :guilty:

I just rented out some points for the 1st time (except the 2 times to a friend and family).

Maybe its more prevalent now that there are tons more owners with all the new resorts added the past few years. Or could also be the long time owners now dont go as often. We bought in 2006 when our kids were young and now they are all in college so we wont be using as many points for a few years...hope to do more trips when DH retires and/or when kids are done college and maybe starting their own families.

Yes there are a ton of owners who rent. There are several that have multiple contracts with 400+ points that rent them out. So it makes it much more difficult for the owner to get a room now a days.

I think as long as it provides a significant savings over getting a room directly from WDW it will continue to be a very popular option. I am sure there are many owners who do rent their points either because they can not take a trip or they have a large contract and rent to off set MF.

I am considering a poly resale contract because well we fell in love with the resort. We also have an AK contract which provides us the perks so we would keep it and likely rent out those points, but primarily use the poly contract for our trip. Everyone's situation is different.

Very good point.

I've owned for about 15 years. I'd never rented out until recently as I had zero interest in dealing with the hassles of renting to an individual. Too much trouble. The ability to use a service like David's has made this almost effortless. A few clicks, a few emails and money appears in my PayPal account. If someone wants to cancel - it is not my problem.

I recently had to spend thousands and thousands of dollars on mobility devices (van with lift, wheelchair, etc). I rented out 2-3 years of points on three contracts and was able to quickly raise a lot of cash without having to sell a contract. I am very thankful that so many people want to rent and that David's provides such great service.

My first time renting out points recently was also via David's and, I agree, it was so easy and quick. I will likely rent out points once a year with them. We keep adding on points but aren't needing them so much right now (as mentioned above...3 kids in college). But hope to spend a lot of time in the winter at WDW when DH retires. So meantime we'll rent points out and David's is the best way.

I am not really sure the parking fee is having much of an impact.

I'm not sure renters are making it harder for DVC Members to get reservations. I think the small point contracts and sheer number of owners makes for rougher availability.
The original contract amount for new owners was 230 points. Now it is around 100, meaning twice as many owners looking for stays than the system was originally designed for.
Let's say a week in a studio is 100 points, and you have three owners with 230 points each looking for a week in a studio, now we'd have 6 or 7 owners looking for that same week.

Renters probably make it a little harder for DVC members to get reservations, but I agree the real crush is more people with smaller contracts looking for studios. I hear a lot of old timers say it was much easier years ago to get last minute-ish reservations. I'm guessing before renting became a thing, a lot of people just let their points expire if they weren't going to use them. Now points are being optimized in ways they weren't before.

I don't think renters make it harder for members to book, because the owners were eligible to book those rooms anyway. I think that having more DVC resorts sold out is the factor that makes it harder to book at the 7 month mark because members know if they want certain rooms or dates they need to book at the 11 month mark.

I have owned 200 points at OKW since 2002. I or some family members go to WDW every other year. As the grandchildren have gotten older, it becomes a little harder to carve out time for an extended stay, but we are still regular and usually, but not always use a 2 BR unit.

I have rented out unused or expiring points maybe 10 times. In the beginning it was through the rent/trade board (and yes that is a hassle and requires lots of time) and more recently time, I have a client who has rented four times from me, making it easier process.

I do not know if more owners are renting out there points are not. Going forward, I am more likely to rent points out due to changing circumstances and suspect many other older owners are to. You can bet, DVC has a pretty good knowledge of the percentage of points being used or by owners or renters.

We rent out our points for Disney cruises. We have gone to Disney so much that we are burned out. We just discovered cruising on the fantasy and renting our points with David’s pays the bill.

It is just so easy renting with a service like David’s. It requires a little bit of your time and the money is in your account.

The argument that renting is making it harder for owners to book doesn’t make sense to me. If I wasn’t renting out my points, I would be using them. I do not let points go to waste.

This is the same as renting. The point I make is if its not the owner, it is every one else, does not matter who or what price.
In that boat, every time my wife and daughter go down without me, they are renters. I dont get paid (not in dollars, but a happy wife). For what ever reason when we purchased, it was and is just my name on the contract.
So Disney would have a hard time making the distinction between a $renter and my family.
DVC is a time share, like any, busy times will be hard to get, but need planning. Any timeshare can be tough for last minute, not just DVC>

I doubt that DVC can tell the difference, since the owner has to make the reservation and controls it until the renter checks in. The renters aren't able to contact DVC directly. And if the names on the reservation are different from the owners' names there's no way DVC could tell whether it's a family member or friend of the owner using the points as a gift vs. a renter. I'm sure we're not the only owners who have given a DVC stay as a wedding present or honeymoon!

Renting points also basically gives an 11mth home resort advantage. Difficult to get rooms at 7 months can be obtained by renting points at 11mths.
We were out of points but wanted to add a few nights pre and post dcl cruise. We rented points at BCV for post cruise as we had never stayed there before. We had never been able to secure a ressie there at 7mths. Renting allowed us to get a room at 11mths out
We are owners and will likely never add on again even though we are always running out of points. The weak Canadian dollar basically adds 25-30% to any add on price. Renting allows us some additional stays without the huge price of a new contract.
Lastly, with rising pricing of room mates it’s almost cheaper to rent points at okw than to pay cash at all stars or pop and definitely at moderate resorts. I think that is the biggest driving factor. We stayed at okw for 1 night pre cruise for 160$.
